| DESIGN NAME: FOLDO bebe PRIMARY FUNCTION: Swinging Crib INSPIRATION: For more than 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates. As a design studio working with cardboard, we felt inspired by this news and we designed Foldo bebe to be more than a cardboard box. The final product it's a swinging crib, a travel crib, a co-sleeper and can be easily recycled. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: There are a lot of weights to carry as a parent, but now is not the case. Meet Foldo bebe: the lightest, versatile, most practical, eco friendly and the less expensive swinging crib in the world. It weights only 3 kg and can be assembled in just 1 minute, without any tools. Use the swinging lock function if you need a steady crib and move it anywhere in the house even with your baby inside. Design for 0 to 6 months, Foldo bebe it's made from 100% recyclable cardboard, printed with soy ink. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The crib can be carried around the house using the handles, can be assembled and disassembled in less than 1 minute and can be used as a travel crib. It's also a swinging crib with a simple and efficient locking system. Foldo bebe can be used as a co-sleeper near the parents bed. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in June 2016 in Bucharest and finished in February 2017. Foldo bebe was exhibited in March 2017 at BabyBoom Fair in Bucharest. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Foldo bebe is made 99% from recyclable cardboard. We only use 4 screws for the swinging lock system. The production process its relatively simple. The material used it's type 5 cardboard - 5 layers of kraft paper. We first print with soy ink the cardboard and then goes to die cutting. After the die cutting procedure is finished we glue the pieces with natural adhesive based on starch corn. We mount the swinging locking pieces with 4 screws and the crib it's ready. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 850 mm x Depth 510 mm x Height 600 mm TAGS: baby crib, co-sleeper, cardboard, FOLDO bebe, crib, baby, bed, carton, practical RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We studied a lot of baby cribs. The most common dimensions used on the market are 1200 mm x 600 mm for the mattress but this dimensions are too much for a newborn. The studies show that in the first three months from birth, the newborn is adapting to our world. That means the newborn needs a tight space to make him feel protected. We designed Foldo bebe with an inside space for the baby of 730 mm x 350mm. That space it's enough for the first 6 months and make him feel protected. Starting from inside to outside dimensions we obtain a small and easy to carry object. After the second prototype was done we delivered Foldo bebe to 5 families with newborns in order to get real feedback. There feedback was amazing. We managed to design a practical crib and mothers can move around the living room or kitchen and take the baby with them anywhere in the house. CHALLENGE: The only and the biggest challenge was to convince mothers that cardboard is a safe material and can be used to fabricate a baby crib. The Finland's story about babies who grew up in cardboard boxes was a good explaining point for us and helped us to overcome this social perspective.
