DESIGN NAME: Romantic Punk
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Garment
INSPIRATION: My design aesthetic refers beyond any stereotypes such as culture, fashion, religious, politics, and race. The purpose of the design is breaking these stereotypes that may occur social conflicts. For understanding the stereotype in fashion, I focused on the particular subject: Punk style. Historical researches with pictures and quotes inspired me to develop the design ideas.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Because of punk history, punk style is likely considered as aggressive and anti-social, but today it is no longer true. They can be romantic and tender as they respect different ideologies and love to interact with people. By combining the soft materials and techniques with the rough punk elements, show how it can be romanticized.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: For romanticizing the typical punk fashion, I designed the pure looking white shirt with the dramatic ruffle for the inner piece which means no matter what their appearances, they are kind and nice person same as others. I also created the outer piece which has a lot of distressed and damaged fabric manipulations to show punk look. These damaged and raw feeling may push people to think stereotypically like punk style people may be aggressive and hard to be with others. By joining these two different looking garments in one piece, it breaks the stereotype about the punk fashion.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 30 2016 and finished in March 20 2017 in NewYork.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: White shirt was made out of twill cotton and ruffle detail on the back side was made out of satin. Back bodies was cut out like hemisphere shape and satin ruffle that sewn in gathering and baby hem finishing was sewn around the hemisphere shape. In the negative space under the ruffle, tie detail was designed to adjust for different body shapes. The sleeves are long and wide and fits on the wrist with the elastic banded cuff. By exaggerating the sleeves and dropping the shoulder, the silhouette looks over-sized. The white shirt have D-rings to hook swivel closures on the black suspender. Each trim has two in each side on the two garments. The black suspender was cut out in a trapezoid shape and the patchwork detail on the front side of the suspender was combination of leather, denim, and cotton and randomly sewn in white, grey, and black threads. For exaggerating damaged surfaces like the typical punk style, I also artistically painted, ripped up, and scratched.

Punk look people helped me to understand their difficulties of social stereotype.
My model wears heavy accessories and make-up to exaggerate punk look and the garment delivers my idea: Don't judge people only by their appearances!
-Results/Insights and Impacts
The project remind people of the stereotype and try not to judge them by the typical standard.
-Effect of the Research in Real-Life Phenomena such as Business, Society and Design Itself
According to the research, 85% of people believe heavy accessories and tattoo which are part of punk look hamper to get a job. Especially, in Korea, it is a big social problem nowadays. Korea is one of the conservative countries because of Confucianism in history, so punk look which is not neat and suit considers as weird, especially in business. Furthermore, almost all company requires applicants' picture in resume and it affects to employment. Thus, job interview plastic surgery appeared and many Koreans do it for getting a job. Appearances do not have any relation in their working abilities, so that we try not to judge people by their appearances. My garment points out this social problem and delivers the message to awake people.
CHALLENGE: It was challenging how to join two different concepts in one piece to convey the message. Throughout many prototypes and design sketches, I could figure out the final look. In addition, for the research part, I tried to focus on why stereotypical judgement is problematic to understand socially isolated communities like punk. It was hard to find an exact example that can directly point out this topic. Finally, through the deep research in diverse ways, I found statistics that can prove majority of people are stereotyped and this judgement hurts someone.
