The Crosley

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Bar Cabinet

INSPIRATION:
During the research project, we found several inspiration sources. The most decisive ones were Crosley and Grundig Record/Radio Players. We were impressed by the classic combination of materials and the simple clean shapes. Wanting to blend the entertainment and receiving of friends and the music experience, we began designing the bar cabinet. Therefore we decided that as it should have a space and a bar function allied with a modern usage of mobiles/usb pens.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Crosley is a high-end hand-crafted bar cabinet. The unique materials and design were thought to provide a luxury experience. The walnut wood’s natural texture and veins combined with gold brass elements are meant to draw your memory to vintage radios and record players. A built-in sound system was added, making it even more special.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Crosley is meant to be used not only as a decorative bar cabinet, but also to explore the music and lounge experience. You can use the shell to place higher bottles and the main frame to storage the glasses and to make your own drinks, meanwhile your favorite music is playing. When you are not enjoying it as a bar, it appears as a vintage console, showing off the noble materials and aesthetics.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project began in December 2016 in Porto, Portugal. And after several phases, was finished in March 2017, in Portugal.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Crosley main structure and legs are sculpted and shaped from walnut wood. The bar has a glass counter top and golden metallic grid secluding the sound component, thereby providing a complete separation of space and function. The walnut doors have a magnetic bar, increasing storage for some bar accessories. For better weight distribution and stability, as well as storage, it was chosen a calacata marble shelf. The sound system requires a battery charger, so we created a small compartment, beneath the bar, hiding a retractile cable.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research started by searching and screening the best bar cabinet models, regarding space usage, ergonomics, human interface and aesthetics. Afterwards I analysed the best examples and assemble a features chart (that are the foundation of the decision map). It was made a search for similar objects that met the features criteria referred. The final selection was based on the value that each one had regarding the several selected features. Choosing these objects, allowed exploring a more specific design and merging the primary goals behind the concept.

CHALLENGE:
The most difficult aspect to overcome was to combine the vintage radio appearance and the modern design of a bar cabinet. I had to explore several options - trying to merge the functional features and the storytelling behind the piece. Without loosing site of the usage, I had to keep in mind the refined polish look that old radio had, choosing the materials and textures to enhance the shape and providing a more complete experience.

PROFILE:
Quivola has born from a unique desire, finding inspiration in the Ancient Gold Cities (Quivira and Cíbola). This new brand wanted to keep the noble philosophy behind the never-ending search and fining the ultimate design concept. The path is as important as the final concept. In every piece, there’s a story and experience beneath, overcoming the minimalist trends. The functional aspect is not forgotten but is combined with a sense of presence and personality. Quivola aims to achieve every time a gold piece and clime a few more steps.
