DESIGN NAME: Shakti' - energy lying within the rock
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art Installation
INSPIRATION: We were commissioned to design, build & install an art installation in a project named Solitaire in the city of Surat, India.
Solitaire means ‘diamond set in a piece of jewelry by itself’. Since diamonds are found in rocks & when these rocks are extracted the diamonds emerge. So here we represent this encrustation of the cut rocks where the lights have been put in a manner that as if the diamonds are sparkling behind these layers of rock crusts resulting in rocks glowing. These hidden diamonds represent ‘Shakti’.
‘Shakti’ in Hinduism means ‘primordial cosmic energy’ & the mural expresses through radiant glow this ‘energy lying within the rock’.
In India Goddess ‘Parvati’, represents, ‘spark’- the energy. This energy which supports the life force can also be experienced in its latent state. This existent energy is ‘Shiva’. Both of these are inseparable.
God ‘Shiva’ is attributed to the one having the limitless expanse of creation & thus he is mysterious, that which we are unable to grasp & that we see/ perceive as DARKNESS.
When we explore the darkness-ignorance ‘knowing’ takes birth. Knowing is Parvati. We perceive what we see in 'spark' - the energy. Energy makes everything perceivable.
Here the rock represents the limitless, mystic 'Shiva' and the spark unfolds the rock with the radiant glow.
In other words, darkness is our ignorance and light is knowledge. Knowledge slowly unfolds the knowing of darkness.'
So here is a mural personifying the latent energy in the rock through its radiant glow.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The natural grains of the surrounding marble stone laid in the lobby space & the meaning of solitaire ie diamond & its genesis inspired this creation of the mural design. The radiant glow symbolizes ‘latent energy lying within the rock’- ‘Shakti’ in turn representing diamond.
To represent this idea german silver metal was selected. To create the organic form representing the encrustation of rock was a real challenge & was authentically handcrafted to bring the design to life using various techniques like hammering, bracing, flaming & eventually buffing the entire mural.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 'Shakti', the mural represents energy. In India we worship energy. Thus this mural is a beautiful way to acknowledge this energy artistically & be inspired. For the ones staying permanently residing in that building as well as the visitors this art representing energy touches & brightens their being.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2015 in factory premises and finished in March 2015 & installed at the site in July 2015 in Surat.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After conceptual derivation of design, it was molded in Plaster of Paris. Then the design was further refined by the use of the various software. The german silver sheets were cut using the Water Jet machine as per the final design. These numerous german silver sheets were compiled together by various handcrafting techniques like hammering, flaming & bracing. Also at places, these sheets were sandblasted. Finally, by using the chemical processes, the desired patina was achieved.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We have been working with various materials since last 20 years in all the abstract ways of representing the myriad ideas bringing them to life. The R&D has been a constant day to day part of our practice.
Metal being one of the primary material in our working since years, while we received the project of designing & executing this mural, the natural choice came to german silver to represent the idea depicted by the architect. To bring about the texture & the colour of the patina was a big challenge which required lot of prototyping.
CHALLENGE: Every project brings its own challenges. Here too to represent the encrusted rock in german silver was a big challenge. The making of plaster of paris mold was easy. But when it came to german silver to attain the perfect texture it took us two months of the making of various prototypes so as to get the uniformity in this large mural. Besides the color of the patina too was a challenging task. In fact, the chemical wash initially applied had to be removed & then once again it was washed to get the desired color by the architect.
