DESIGN NAME: ROGO
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Home appliance Controller
INSPIRATION: ROGo is a compound word for Goal and Rotating. The controller (which has included ergonomics input in the design and development and hence offers outstanding usability) can be used as a remote or plug into the home appliances. While there is much to love about the app based controller world, not every experience and interaction needs to be app based. Sometimes the feel of a physical device can be more satisfying in an entirely subliminal way. ROGO can operate (control) 3 devices at the same time and define custom icons for new operation management and record summary and publish as a text. Consumers have the ability to reduce the energy consumption with controlling the operations in an appropriate and easy way and will not be frightened from new menus of new generation home appliances.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ROGo constitutes all facilities for home-appliance's controllers which includes mechanical push buttons, touch keys, rotational keys. ROGo have designed ergonomically for human beings comfortable use. Actually all capabilities of a smart phone such as being user friendly, are employed on ROGo, for instance while using a range hood, other home appliances are also controllable by ROGo. ROGo is so compatible with most home-appliances in a secure and quick way and its icons and users variation are adaptive. It is also possible to save usage manuals in ROGo and it can notify the device’s operational conditions everywhere to consumers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: ROGo is unique. A beautifully curved glass display, centered on a weighted rotating ring. Every element of ROGo has been designed to create an incredible user experience. The controller is capable of controlling home-appliances in two conditions; remote controlling and controlling when it is embedded inside the device. Also one of the most important capabilities of ROGo is that the controlling process can also be done by connecting it to other similar appliances which are using it as an on board panel to send controlling commands to the device. ROGo operating is so intuitive that it takes very little learning.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2014 and the first production batch will be delivered to awaiting customers in Q1 2017. 2 of Iranian home appliance producer ordered 4500 ROGo for first usage.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Digital and Electronic Device Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: ROGo design fill out the empty space between the methods of appliance controllers(app based or physical based). ROGO consist of 3 surfaces. Top Surface: A glass LCD screen and a rotating ring(wheel), Time and Temperature Display. Bottom Surface: a USB connector for charging a dry battery with a dry charger module. Lateral Surface: Processor and Interface circuit, Temperature and motion sensor with a Bluetooth module and a Plastic body which is non inflammable accepted by Glow Wire Test in IEC60335-1 standard.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Product dimensions, Diameter 35mm x Height 120mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The motif of ROGO design began with the psychological behavioral study of home appliances controllers’ usage analysis. We design a controller which Consider the range of people that will use and make them enjoy operating their appliances based on designed experiment results (according to the customer statistical data measurement and quality function deployment) for group of consumers in order to recognize their exact needs. Results said to us: While there is much to love about the digital world, not every experience and interaction needs to be digital and we realized this whilst watching people carefully dragging their fingers across screens. Sometimes the feel of a physical device can be more satisfying in an entirely subliminal way. We set out to look at alternate ways to adjust things with your hands. Customers have so many problems with variety of appliance controllers and sometimes can’t understand user guides well or they can’t teach a usages to each other in easy way. ROGO can save the operations for a period. Producers can’t reach a brief and real data about how people use their controllers for appliances and ROGO can help people and designers to share their experiences by numbers based on how to be used question. We used this information to determine the physical and electronically properties of ROGO and then looked at the types of technology we needed to then integrate.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design activity was to put all of the technology in such a small space, in order for the product to be retro-fit. into a standard IEC electrical safety and box. We have had to build a working relationship with the display and chip manufacturer in order to make a custom solution due to the limited space available. Some of the wall thicknesses and parts made are pushing to the the edge of CNC manufacturing capabilities. The communication safety (include anti hack software) was the last hard part for making ‘ROGOlity’ possible.
