| DESIGN NAME: Homesickness PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Devices INSPIRATION: Inspired by Gloria’s enthusiasm on suitcases collection, to create one has always been her greatest wish. Ideas of combining wood and suitcases or devices were bouncing thoroughly in Gloria’s mind and imagination, her philosophy and perspectives on nature were best narrated by using wood.A fruitful and muscular tree grows from a seed, a person is made begins from a family. Under the conception of Chinese ideology, family is the root of everything, building strong relationships within a family is an essential part of life. Consequently, wood can be implied as an integration of Gloria’s beliefs in relations and connections. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Homesickness expressed the emotion of missing home and explored the possibility of wood creation. Character: hand-written signboards design was popular in Macao,China between the 70s to 80s. Resilience: the texture of noodles cooked by Gloria’s grandmother. This briefcase comprises love, memory and relationships. Fragrance: a lighting device (Lighting an incense stick is a tradition on paying tribute to God in Buddhism). It portrays the scent at home in an afternoon. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Character is a paper/notes holder, there is a record of traditional Chinese characters kept inside a cavity that can by view by audiences. Fragrance is a manual lighting device, by opening the device, there is a small hole for inserting an incense stick. Switch on the button inside the small cup, then close the device. The scent of incense stick would come from a tiny tube from the device. Resilience is a bouncy briefcase, user can bend it and store little items in there. It was concisely shaped and crafted by a wood band saw machine. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project Homesickness started in December 2016 in Taiwan and finished in January 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Fragrance and Character were cropped from a log (White Oak) by using electrical saw to an ideal proportion. Liquid gloss were pour into the hollow space for Fragrance. The lightening component is a series circuit made up by a 9V battery and super flux cored solder, while the voltages cross through by switching on under a small cup. In order to make a match shape to the hollow space for Character, Using the software Illustrator to measure a 1:1 proportion in cutting a Acrylic Sheet into an accurate shape to fit the hollow space for Character,and the text's engrave was done by a laser machine. Resilience was concisely shaped and crafted by a wood band saw machine.Also, the experiment and making of Resilience were trial for a long period of time to craft the equitable balance in order to show the aesthetics of the handicrafts, as well as the elasticity of wood. Multiple tools and machines are assisted to fulfil the perfection on completing the project. By investigating historical information and references, the consistency of ideas and research on traditions and Chinese ideologies are matched. Character contains the extinct Chinese calligraphy that is an impressive heritage from the Hong Kong-Macao area during the 70s to 80s. While Fragrance represented an activity which is commonly appear in a Buddhism family. NAME: Gloria's Art Corner PROFILE: Gloria's Art Corner is a multimedia platform, which was founded by Gloria Wong in 2014, where different forms of creative work, graphic design, 2D & 3D vision dynamic, film and installation art. Gloria is currently studying Creative Media at the Shih Chien University based in Taipei, Taiwan. Her works focus on portrait and human elements.
