DESIGN NAME: Memoir Through The Rooms
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Conceptual Fashion Design
INSPIRATION: My father is someone who has a strong emotional attachment to the idea of "home". From China to Canada to New York, among the countless moves we have had in the past two decades, he always tried his best to preserve a home in each city we lived in; one which we held the deepest memory in. Every home locks within it the emotion and history of its occupied time. They are both irreversible and irreplaceable. When I unify the traces left in these homes, along with a mix of my own emotion and recollection, they become my most vivid memoir in this river of time. From the past to the future.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In this competition, I am submitting a collection named "Memoir Through The Rooms". It is a collection in which I define the idea of "time" through my own recollection of memory and emotions. The five outfits respectively represent the past, present, and future. Through a unique lens, I reflect upon the changes time has left on me as a person, and portrays the idea of "time" through the most personal and emotional perspective.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There are 5 looks, 7 garments in this collection
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project took 3 months, form January to April 2016, taking place in China and New York.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In this collection, a unique technique is applied on the textile digital print development process. Instead of printing the images onto the fabric, the prints are directly pressed onto fabric by using a special paper. With this technique, the prints image quality is unaffected by the textile printing process or the type of fabric used; presenting very clear and vibrant colors on the textile. In addition, the technique gives a much stronger structure to the textile, helping to hold the complicated silhouette in the designs. Last but not least, this technique abolishes the limitation of what choice of fabric can be applied for digital printing. It allows the designer to choose textiles that are not traditionally used for digital printing, such as wool or faux suede.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: On the design aspect, I chose layering as my main method of design and construction. I experimented with different options and expanded my thoughts based on the idea of times. This includes the layering of textile, color, weight, and imagery. This method creates a sense of vagueness, just as my memory and emotions of flash in vague layers when I look at these homes.
The color scheme is drawn from two sources. One is the colors in the photos I took, the other is my emotional impression of the homes. My elementary school home is where I kept my purest and happiest memory, yet it is also where my grandmother passed away. I choose pastel yellow to portray the former, and black for the latter. Canada is where I feel free and comfortable, while New York is where I pursue my dream and passion. I respectively represent them with blue/greens and red.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in creating this collection lies in conveying the abstract idea of personal emotion and memory to a visual imagery, delivered through the lens of fashion design.
