DESIGN NAME: KLIP
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Launch Event
INSPIRATION: Our inspiration stems from the shipping port itself, where a port, vessel and light house, accompanied by 12 panel standees was built to best represent & inform attendees of the shipping industry at the launch. For the launch gambit, we recreate one of the largest supertanker that stretches 1,246 feet & 9 inches, TI Europe, that is parked at the existing port. Our team had to learn shipping process, procedures & terminologies to ensure that we had the right representation of a port.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 1 day event consists of 2 parts; Forum and Launch, where the Forum had global shipping leaders discuss the sustainability and issues of the industry. The launch saw the support of local authorities where the port was announced as an industrial hub, bunkering hub and a port of refuge. We divided 173.17ft x 119.47ft ballroom into 3 sections to fit in the launch, forum and information area., the launch had a customised surprise element launch gambit to represent a shipping port.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The launch gambit features the arrival of an Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) vessel. The vessel model was hidden behind black curtains prior to the launch to give the crowd a surprise element. Once the representatives touched the glass globe, it lights up with the initials, KLIP, which is the cue for the vessel to arrive the port. With the vessel arriving at port, it symbolise that the first vessel has arrived the first line of shore and it open to ships from international waters.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The event ideation started in August 2016, where we presented the idea to the client. The idea was signed on a week later, where we had to further elaborate on production items and learn the information required to recreate the port and vessel launch gambit. After 2 months of planning, discussion, correction and creation, the idea was finally executed at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Malaysia on the 1st of November 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The port, vessel and light house were constructed with the combination of polystyrene, wood, wire mesh and plaster. Grey polystyrene bollards were created to have a realistic touch. The vessel required a lot of hand work as there were straight lines involved and to ensure that the plaster finishing was smooth. The Forum’s globe backdrop had trail lights to indicate the ships’ waterways and the launch’s backdrop displayed the actual port limit.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Undertaking this project has required us to dig deeper into the shipping industry, where we find ourselves learning about vessels, water depth required for vessels to dock and the terms used in the industry. We gathered most of our information directly from the clients as it is authentic and reliable. After weeks of input and reading, we have successfully created a gambit that represents a vessel arriving at port that has stunned the crowd with its accuracy in execution.
CHALLENGE: Since the shipping industry is a niche one in Malaysia, one of the challenges of this event was to showcase the enormity & provide condensed information on Kuala Linggi International Port to investors & members of the media with the support of the local authorities. In the execution of the gambit, we had to carry out multiple rehearsals to ensure that the coordination of light, sound, movement & visuals are in sync. It was crucial that all teams were on point to create the right atmosphere.
