DESIGN NAME: Rebell
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bike Bell
INSPIRATION: The main focus of this product was to create a bike bell for sportive riders. By using user centered techniques we could determine what the end user would like and what the doesn't like about existing products. This way we could create a solution that would suit the needs of our user group. The final result is a product that every cyclist would like to use on their bike.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Rebell is a unique redesign of a bike bell, made for the sportive cyclist. The unique properties of this bike bell are the mounting position and system, together with the aesthetics and integration in the stem and handlebar of the bicycle. The user group of this product are all sportive cyclist, from road cycling over commuter to mountainbike riders. Everybody can use the Rebell!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The use of the Rebell is very simple, just pull the tab and the bell will make noise. Installing the product is simple ass well. Remove the existing topcap of the bike and replace it with one made for the Rebell. Afterwards the bell needs to be pushed on the bolt that is visible. Now you are ready to use your Rebell. Let's start ringing!
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started February 2016 in Kortrijk and was finished in June 2016. The end result was exposed on the thesisproject expo in July 2016 at the Industrial Design Centre in Kortrijk.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Rebell is made from aluminium. This material makes it possible to make a very light and durable product that is easy to machine. The technique used to make the shape is CNC-milling. By doing a lot of test with shape and size, the correct sound could be found for the appropriate material.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The main dimensions of the product are Dia 36mm x 5mm. This dimension is the same as a spacer placed under the stem. This makes sure that the product has the same visual style as the rest of the components on the bike.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design was made with the 'design by prototyping' philosophy. By making a lot of prototypes, and testing them with the end user, a great product could be achieved. About 40 models where made to create a single prototype. Changing the materials and dimensions of the product resulted in different sound levels and qualities of the end result. Combining the best options from all those tests resulted in a product that produces enough sound, but still have a enjoyable sound. The materials where also selected on the possibilities for mass production and cost-efficiency.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this product was combining the shape of the product with the material. Because this is a bike bell, the sound of the product needs to be good, which is hard to predict on computer models. A lot of prototypes had to be made to achieve this sound.
