DESIGN NAME: Continuity House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Unit
INSPIRATION: It is a project to design a around 1300sqft apartment for a couple and their three cats. Privacy between spaces become less important beacause of the low quantity of users. Therefore, it provides us higher possibility to increase different kind of bonding between space in order to enhance users' interaction.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The main concept of this project is about Continuity. The word "Continuity" is about both solid & virtual connections between space. MADMEN STUDIO make use of 4 keys elements including Wall Planes, Vision, Human Circulation & Penetration of Light to achieve our core idea. The entire space is integrated and the in-between connection between space and users are increased. Users are no longer isolated by boundaries within rooms but being pulled closer and closer.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Few pieces of ribbed glass are framed by a series of customized steel frame structural and are applied to act as a partition between a study and a master bedroom. The special semi-transparent partition is able to do what traditional brick wall cannot do as it allows natural lights to penetrate between rooms but, at the same time, provides privacy between users.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2016 and finished in July 2016. The project is located at a new built luxury Hong Kong estate, Mayfair by The Sea.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Hong Kong is known as a high dense city with high population. Most of the flat units are quite small and just designed for basic functional purpose. These typical units are usually combinations of rooms without any architectural, humanity and aesthetic spatial linkages. Therefore, adding these values to the design become much more important than any other large and low dense cities for increasing the living quality in Hong Kong.
Continuity House is a residential design project which is a experiment about strengthening the bonding, no matter solid or virtual, between space according to the users' habit and needs.
CHALLENGE: In order to save budget, the client did not want to replace the existing flooring material.
Demolition for new layout arrangement become challenging and it was also a difficult task for us to pick material for newly added designs to match with existing flooring.
