| DESIGN NAME: Speed PRIMARY FUNCTION: Electric Surfboard INSPIRATION: I inspired from the diesel-powered surfboards while imagining a new concept one person transportation device. I thought new design will be more meaningful one person transportation device if it can be run by electric powered that it does not cause environmental pollution on the sea. And a nice exterior design will be reminiscent of a sports car on the sea. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Speed is a new conceptual sports surfboard. Surfers can ride the waves on the surface of the sea more dramatically. If there will be a maritime accident, the Speed can arrive at the accident point and save the life within a golden time for survival. That’s because it is powered by electricity and propelled by small jet drive. In particular, I suggest a new style for one person water transportation device by the form and details reminiscent of a fancy sports car. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Basically you can run this board in a same way with the general surfboard. However the difference is to approach the point of surfing faster than the non-power board. First, it can be running once you push the black button on the fore after getting on the board. On the other side, you can off the motor if you push the button again when you finish the riding. Besides, there’re a display at the center of rear face and navigation lightings to indicate the riding directions at night time. It should be helpful for us to save the life in the emergency situations. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The electric surfboard is made by a carbon fiber. That’s because the material is less environmental pollution and more strength, light weight than other materials. To make the board, should make a plug and a mold using the CNC machine and then laminate the carbon fiber. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: SPECIFICATIONS: - Board: Carbon fiber - Jet drive: Maximum Input Power(11kW)/ Maximum Input RPM(16000)/ Static Thrust(over 400 N) - Electric motor: 7.2kw(continuous power) DIMENSIONS: 2000(L) x 630(W) x 210(H)mm (excl. Grips and Pins) PACKAGE: Knock-down assembly TAGS: Sports Surfboard, New Individual Transportation, Speed Board, Life Saving Board, Electric Jet Board, New Watercraft RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Type of Research: A Research to design Methodology: Ethnography, Concept Test Research Objectives: That’s the objective to reach the human centered design by observing attentively and understanding the target people. Data collection and Research Tools Used: Interview, Survey, Memorandum, Observation INSIGHTS AND IMPACTS: I realized that the surfers who interviewed and answered to the survey can be seen that a strong sense of adventure about the new concept surfboard while they believe strongly in the surf itself being one with nature. Therefore, it was confirmed the market potential of electric power jet surfboard. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of design is to reduce the dimension and weight in order to easy to move and transport. That’s because it is single transport equipment. So I was distributed to four electric batteries and carefully consider the installation locations when I design the exterior shape.
