WOOleD

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Desk Lamp

INSPIRATION:
In internet searches observed the solid wood desk lamps shortage. A lot of them are very simples or with little design work. This inspire me to create a functional, simple forms, elegant and attractive design solid wood lamp. Besides I focussed to design a lamp easy to assemble and detachable to package in the smallest possible space. I discovered neodymium magnets, which are perfect for this project because they have a high clamping force and a large sizes and forms variety.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
WOOleD is a solid wood lamp. The lamp is formed by 3 elements assembled by 8mm diameter and 8mm height neodymium magnets so that the different parts are firmly fixed and therefore the assembly process is simplified. The switch is a capacitive sensor embedded inside the wood strip. WOOleD has a 18 SMD 5050 led strip, which provides 300 lumens intensity. The lamp has 3 colorless satin polyurethane coats in order to increase their impact resistance and enhance wood color.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
After opening the box the installation is very simple. Simply join the pieces as shown in the instructions. The lamp must be connected to the power, by inserting the plug into the back of the wood strip. To turn on the lamp simply touch lightly the top of the wood strip, just in the center of the column. Touch again to turn off the lamp. If you want to adjust the light intensity, just keep the sensor pressed to the desired intensity.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2015 in Toro ( Zamora) and finished in December 2015.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
All pieces are cut and planed to leave them to the desired dimension. Then all pieces edges are chamfered by a routing tool. Afterward the interior of the wood strip is milled. A plastic strip is glued into the wood strip. Also led strip and sensor are glued too. Next step is glued the wood strip and the base parts. The pieces received three coats of colourless satin polyurethane varnish applied by a paint sprayer Wagner. Magnets are glued two by two and the lamp is assembled in a wood template.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Lamp parts have the following dimensions in centimeters ( Length x Width x Height): Base: 25 x 12 x 4 Column: 29 x 8 x 4 Wood strip: 60 x 4 x 1,6 Lamp assembled has the following dimensions in centimeters: 60 x 12 x 37 Packaged lamp has the following dimensions: 62 x 16 x 7

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Most of the components of the lamp were searched on Internet. An intensive search was conducted to find the most appropriate led strip for this design. The most intense research was finding a capacitive sensor that was cheap, easy to install and capable of operating inside the lamp. Carpenters were consulted in order to improve the manufacturing process. This support enabled a constant and effective flow of work.

CHALLENGE:
At first, the capacitive sensor did not react well once inside the wood strip. It was solved reducing the thickness of the wood between the sensor and contact area. The biggest obstacle was sticking magnets. many test both depth and type of glue were carried out. It appeared the problem that magnets came off. It is solved by shortening the outgoing magnet and using an adhesive recommended by supplier of magnets.
