DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Miau Lamp

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Night Light

INSPIRATION:
The design concept was developed in order to allow the customer to make a emotional connection to the product. It intends to link user's emotions to the lamp through their love for animals or even the memories of their first pets. The whole research for this design was made around elements that resemble childhood, which are nostalgic memories.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Miau Lamp is a night light designed for kids and young adults. It stands out from the competitors since it improves the user experience with the environment when it is time to sleep. Most of the night lights offered in the market do not allow children to play or even to feel comfortable when all other lights in the room are off. Miau Lamp also provides versatility to the user since they can wind/unwind the cord to adjust the distance of the light according to their need.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The shape of the wooden cat allows the user to interact with the product in different ways. The user can choose where they want to have their lamps (on the floor, up on a table, hang on the wall using the tail, for example) and how close they want the light to them. The long cord gives the user the possibility of playing with the light and also to decide which spot of the room will be more illuminated.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2015 and finished in December 2015 at Rochester Institute of Technology, RIT (Rochester, NY) and sponsored by CAPES/Cnpq (Brazilian Government Education Program).

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The fabrication process was divided in two main parts: the wooden cat and the yarn ball. For the wooden cat, the original shape was cut in a CNC machine, hand sanded and then glued. Finally, a water based finish was applied on the wood. The yarn ball was made of a yarn wound around a plastic ball, using glue to secure it.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Type of Wood: Ash ; Type of Bulb: LED C7 Night Light 0.75W / Wooden Cat Dimensions: Width 220 mm x Depth 76 mm x Height 195 mm ; Yarn Ball Dimension: Diameter 100 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
All the design research was developed based on principles of Emotional Design, focusing on the possible reasons that makes someone to buy a product. The study also includes a research about how each light color can affect the mood of the user and which ones are more appropriate to a night light. All this study was important in order to come up with ideas that would attract users through their personal feelings and memories, providing a nostalgic connection with the Miau Lamp.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge of this project was to come up with a design that would be feasible in price to the expected customer. Since the project was an initiative from the RIT ID school, the main goal was to concept a singular design for 6 lamps that would be sold to the university community. With that in mind, the challenge was to find materials and fabrication processes that would reduce cost and also give a nice look to the product.
