DESIGN NAME: M Cat's Cradle
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: Inspired by previous venture in chair design, 'M Cat's Cradle' is the metal version of the A' Design Award winner 'Cat's Cradle.' The front legs penetrate the seat plain to become the "king posts." This reversal of roles of support and compression inspired the design of this chair.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 'M Cat's Cradle' is built of bent and welded Schedule 40 steel tube. Painted black, the light steel frame is strung with red and white, 3/16" bungee cord. The feet terminate into carved, Ash slippers. Playful, with a bit of bounce I would relax into this chair to watch the sun set and wish the stars to appear. Years of study of human factors, furniture history and material science take a shower together and the result, scrubbed clean is 'M Cat's Cradle'.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: After 'Cat's Cradle' placed in the Gold of A' Design Award, I, with a metal sculptor, produce a metal model at 1.5":1' scale. The Model had the charm I sought but I was challenged to find the time to make a full scale prototype. This year we made the full scale with Schedule 40, gas line, pipe. The interaction with a design/build, metal sculptor was essential. Adding to the complexity, the elasticity of the bungee seat and back allow horizontal and vertical woven elements to form parabolic but receptive planes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: A first Model of the M Cat's Cradle was made in 2012 in Maryland, USA, after extensive drawing and ideating. The full scale was made in North Carolina, USA in 2015. A weekend of bending, welding and painting was followed by another weekend of knotting, pulling and tying bungee to the frame.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Action and poetry are paramount to our design process. Action with skill and poetry as in making mingle the brains in our fingers with the beginners mind. Schedule 40, gas line, pipe is bent into a frame and welded with an eye to symmetry and frequent testing of ergonomics. The economy of materials and making in the frame can be mass produced. The bungee cord seat and back could be made efficient and is special enough in look and feel to be worth the labor.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: M Cat's Cradle is
737 mm wide x 610 mm deep x 1000 mm tall
Weight : 1.5 kg
Schedule 40 Steel tubing with primer and black paint.
3/16" bungee attached with threaded bolts and tied.
Feet are Ash 'shoes'.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Even in the early stages of producing the wooden 'Cat's Cradle' I considered making a metal version of the design. The 'M Cat's Cradle' is a continuation of exploring the contradictions of comfort, form and materiality in chair design. Similar to the 'A' Back Windsor (2011) and the Cat's Cradle (2012) this chair allows the front leg to penetrate the seat plane to become the king post. Thus, both the appearances and facts of tension and compression are inverted or at least played with.
CHALLENGE: The chairs 'sits' strongly within a rich history of design. I am a designer and design educator and no shortage of thought, research and conversation has contributed to this design. The tension of woven bungee formed a parabolic, complex surface that juxtaposes elegantly with the linearity of the metal work. Further challenge was overcome to attach the bungee cord to the metal in an appropriate way. I used bolts, crimps and knotting to make a stable and comfortable seat and back.
