PRIMARY FUNCTION: Metal-Cut Display Store
INSPIRATION: The project draws inspiration from the rich heritage of metal cutting in India, aiming to save this profession and its artists from extinction as more architects everyday opt for less time consuming techniques.
Shop space shall be utilized to display various applications of water Jet CNC cutting, aiming to salvage art from the past and redefine it for the modern world. Its revival and reinterpretation would increase demand and generate work for the artists.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The unique feature of the Project was to have the store designed as the display itself, to showcase metal sheets cut through CNC machines.
The project uses a simple motif in the interiors to unify the whole design.
It is showcased in various decorations, throughout the store, in outdoor garden lamps, main door, flooring, ceiling, wall panels and other art work. It is used as a main element of design throughout the store and creates a strong coherence among the varied elements in a small space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Located in one of the bay shops, the main door opens onto a common corridor, which necessitates it being visually appealing to draw customers inside.
It was thus designed as an amalgamation of technology and tradition. Copper and brass were used to give it a classical soul with a modern twist of metal cutting.
One enters to see a main screen through a dark space signifying an outdoor garden. An intricate screen leads the user inside. A layered application of various elements makes for a richer user experience.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Quantitative Research was employed to determine the plight of metal artisans today and device strategies to provide a platform for them. Case studies and analytical research helped with the study of similar projects to help with the design.
Other tools of data collection were library studies and internet research. The team interacted with people in the metal art business to get a better idea of the way art is being viewed in the architectural world today, which provided valuable insights.
CHALLENGE: It was a small space and the program demanded a display of several applications. It was very difficult to create harmony amongst various elements in such a tight space.
