DESIGN NAME: Primavera
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hand knotted Rug
INSPIRATION: Inspired by natures beauty and its four seasons, primavera echoes the blue tones of the wild bluebells of spring. As nature interacts with people, the hidden image of a woman is revealed in the background of the floral textures. The design is innovated with an artistic concept of capturing the two images combined into a soft modern abstract design that brings the two worlds together. Each one balances together creating a true harmony.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The objective was to create a harmonious design with different floral textures and hidden inside the design would be that element of surprise, as the end user discovered the detailing of an abstract face. The aim was to blend both concepts together so the designs became one canvas that would be more subtle and not too over bearing together.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design opens up new ways of taking old traditions into a modern way of thinking. With the skilled artisans techniques of hand weaving this quality will last for years and outlive machine made designs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design concept was started in November 2014 and it took about five months to hand weave in India

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The wool and silk yarns were first hand-spun to create various thicknesses that would give a three-dimensional effect when woven into a flat form. Then the yarns were Double Dipped Dyed to achieve even more gradient tones on the different thicknesses, which intensifies the colors. These then added even more variations and extra depths in the design, which creates even more interesting effects when woven.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Dimensions are 2500mm width by 3000mm Length. The rug is made of Hand-spun wool and the highest quality hand-spun silks in the Persian knot. The date of Completion was May 2015.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Having over twenty years as an interior designer, I learned that a rug had a strong effect on all interiors. I set up my own company with a different design philosophy which was missing from the market. My instinct was to create designs that were artistic and which were created from my own experience rather than just patterns.
CHALLENGE: One of the rewarding challenges was to work with the skilled artisans who brought with them generations of techniques but whose vision of design was rooted in their older traditions. I had to work with them to understand my visions and to challenge their own ideas of what a rug design was all about. It was not until the rug was finished, that they saw the vision. It was very rewarding to see their satisfaction and pride on something they had never made before and now had become part of them too.
