DESIGN NAME: The Amman Light
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ambient Light
INSPIRATION: On many connected hills, a series of buildings arranged like steps reflect the sun. From any point in the city, one can view their horizon-hued façades, punctuated by dark green cyprus trees.
This is my Amman.
The Amman Skyline Light is my homage to this incomparable view and my identity, an ambient sculpture to illuminate the many narratives within the city’s walls.
The Amman Light can be used as a lantern on the wall or as a stand-alone piece. It can also be seen in the “off”mode as a sculpture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This contemporary hand bent and hand assembled light, reflect the beauty of Amman; the city of steps. But most importantly this light carries many stories, experiences in which one can take and share anywhere they go. With very limited resources the design and details stand out. what holds the light together is also a slide through detail to give the user an option to hang it on the wall as a lantern.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Made to order every light sparks a memory into its owner’s heart. The moment it rests on a surface it's angled shape and steps edges spreads the spirit of Amman and the moment it is lit and the skyline of Amman illuminates, the personal stories unfold leaving the space with many shadows and smells of the place it was inspired from. If hung on the wall the reflection of the print and shape give a special ambient feel of Amman. When not lit, it’s sculptural which adds beauty to any space.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: as the sun hits the hills of Amman especially in the evening the picture left is breathtaking. I took many photos of those hills and I started experimenting with shapes using paper and the prints. I came to realisation that the steps are an element that I should exaggerate, and to match its spirit an uneven angled shape took over the plan. My work is all hand assembled, the outer-shell is ink on plexi glass hand bend to shape. All the fittings are stainless steel hand welded and holds the shape using screws.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: Challenges started with the unforgettable scene that inspired me and rose up the bar for the solution. The result, which focused on the angled shape and stepped edges resolved this particular challenge. The second biggest challenge was the quality of print and materials. The light is produced in Jordan, which has limited resources for manufacturing and materials. Having to repeat the test pieces more than ten times to get the final print and shape up to an acceptable level was energy consuming.
