One-Handed Plate Set
Stroke victims and people with disabilities have to adapt to eating with one hand, making cutting & scooping bites tough. Current solutions offer a cutting board to cut the meal before transferring it into a plate. This does not work for hot meals. Can we give these users the chance to enjoy a hot steak without attracting too much attention to their disability? A socially acceptable & dignifying solution; bringing fine & healthy dinning habits back to their lives.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
One-handed plate and bowl set is the ideal solution for one-handed users. Its unique design, allows the user to cut their food directly in their dinning plate, keeping the meal hot and tasty. The ambidextrous design of this cutting edge not only serves as an elegant plate partition, but also an anchor for the bowl. The bowl is fixed into place, where the user can enjoy any soup, noodle, salad or snack in a stable and elegant plate setting!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The plate is stabilized using an anti-slip base, allowing for one-handed use. An ambidextrous partition acts as a multiple direction cutting corner. Giving freedom to eat a bite of steak, followed with salad, right off the same plate. A wide & angled high border catches spills & acts as a scooping edge.
The bowl locks into place on the plate. It’s vertical walls allow the user to scoop up their bite against them.
Combined, the bowl and plate give the user an appetizing sensory meal with practical uses; A clean resting place for utensils, wide parameter for spills, & space for an extra snack.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project started in September 2014 and ended in February 2015
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The plate and bowl are made of ceramic. They are stackable and easy to clean (Dishwasher safe). This allows a more hygienic product without any seams or areas where food may trap.
The plate users a non-slip base attached to it for stability on tabletops, giving the user the ability to push against it to scoop up their bite.
The non-slip material can be silicon.

We conducted primary & secondary research to understand the problems facing one-handed users in dinning. An increasing number of stroke victims losing motion in one side of their body & accident victims, who are forced to adapt to preforming daily routines in a new way. We studied the effects it would have on their health due to a change in eating habits. This combined with a market study, which demonstrated limited options available tailoring to the emotional and physical needs of this group.
To design an ergonomically focused product for assisted living, without the visual cues or complexities that differentiate it from regular tableware.
