DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
PushPin

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Tray

INSPIRATION:
Most elderly and disabled people suffer poor and deteriorating health simply because they struggle to eat their meals. This inspired us to bring ease and enjoyment back to mealtime, not just for people with disabilities, but also for everyone. In this fast-paced modern life, we tend to eat on the go. By designing a tray that reduces spillage and mess. We promote healthy eating and enjoyment in mealtime, and allow users to take their meal outside the kitchen to any other room.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
PushPin Tray allows a user to place anything on it, and it will hold it in place. A grid of buttons compress down when something is placed on them, then they simply pop right up, once the object is removed. Any cup, bowl or shape is held in place through the unique grid. A carefree tray, perfect for all users, designed to fit comfortably on anyone’s lap. Its modern design with concealed handles elevates the dinning experience closer to the user, so they may enjoy a more sensory meal.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A tray that provides stability to anything placed on its platform. A board of dynamic pins, like a keyboard, where some of them move down when an item is placed over, and the other surrounding pins remain upright, holding the item in its place. The tray contains about 3000 pin where each is 5 mm in diameter. This allows any item with any shape to set safely and steadily on its platform.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project started in September 2014 and ended in February 2015

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Primarily wood and plastic for the main housing of the tray. Stainless steel can be used for higher-end finishes. The technology behind the pushpins is easily manufactured, as it mimics a very commonly produced product; keyboards. This is done using a combination of an elastic plastic, such as silicon and a hard plastic for the pin cap. They are laid out and assembled as one unit, and can be easily rolled up and cleaned.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The total size is 42cm X 60cm and elevated 10.5cm. The tray platform is 30cm X 48cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research gathered data on eating habits of society. Identifying physical and emotional factors that, for example prohibit the elderly and disabled from eating well. We gathered similar data on modern families and working adults. We conducted field research and anaylyzed habits. A market study was conducted that showed a need for a tool that allows access to a worry free, meal anywhere not just the kitchen table, adapting to different needs. Encouraging healthy meals, not snacking.

CHALLENGE:
The design challenge was to create an adaptive tray with the minimal complexity in manufacturing and maintenance. We needed to solve not only stability and adaptivity, but also, a feasible manufacturability, and easy cleaning. The design went through various iterations until it reached a balance between functionality and practicality.
