DESIGN NAME: Bull Cart
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table, Coffe Table
INSPIRATION: Inspired on my academic research "Design and Brazilian popular culture. The challenge of designing from autochthon handicraft" published by the 4th International Forum of Design as a Process, my design represents the Brazilian autochthonous handicrafts in an industrial language, more precisely a miniature bull cart made by Cicero, a Northeastern Brazilian craftsman. At the same time, it is a tribute to the architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi who pioneered the Brazilian autochthonous craft studies.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design has an aesthetic known as "rudeness" based on the Brazilian autochthonous objects of popular northeastern culture which makes it a unique design. Being the parts independent, it gives the user the independency to create spatial possibilities to decorate the environment and adapt it to his needs. The technological material, thermochromic varnish, was used to create more interactivity between the user and the table, yet the color was chosen to make reference to the Northeastern bull carts.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Separate parts: The fact that the product is composed of independent parts allows the user to customize the ambient decor according to his interest. Thermochromic Varnish: The thermochromic varnish, technological material applied on the table surface of the cart, allows user an interaction to redden such surface in contact with hot objects in reference to the reddened color of the northeast bull carts in contact with the reddish earth from semiarid region of northeastern Brazil.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2014 in Milan and finished in February 2015 in Belo Horizonte.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The production process starts with industrial standard procedures of working, cutting and low relief on wood by CNC machines, automated drill presses, gluing and edge strips applications. The glass is produced on demand. The thermochromic varnish, technological material, is applied only on the surface of "cart top". The connectors are purchased in the standard market. The main materials used are renewable.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: General assembly 900mm x 1400mm x 470mm representing the Bull cart proportions in which it was based.
Subassembly "Bull" 450mm x 700mm x 440mm and "Cart" 800mm x 900mm x 470mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In my research I studied the theories of Lina Bo Bardi on Brazilian handicraft and design in order to make a design with the rudeness aesthetic. Then I conducted a field research in which various objects of Brazilian popular culture were documented; especially a small bull cart handicraft used as the basis for my design that kept the general proportions of the original object. My public link is directed to my website where my full research can be accessed on the tab "Artigo".
CHALLENGE: The big challenge was to transcend the rudeness aesthetic that is characteristic of the Brazilian autochthonous handcraft to the coffee table design. Thus I deepened my knowledge of the theories of Lina Bo Bardi about the pre-handicrafts and Brazilian autochthonous handicraft so much so that a field research was done in places where Lina Bo Bardi documented artisanal objects in the Brazilian Northeast.
