DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Green Hunger

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Inclusive Recycling Bins

INSPIRATION:
The usage of recycling bins in many densely populated cities is still low though recycling has been promoted for years. It is found that many people are more reluctant to use recycling bins because the bins are covered with dirt or damaged. The parts of the many existing bins are not easily replaced and repaired, and without other choices the entire bin is replaced. In order to promote environmental sustainability, it is necessary to design sustainable products which attract people to use them.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Green Hunger is a set of recycling bins which aims to promote environmental sustainability through the image of baby birds. Its form illustrates the ‘hungry’, ‘eagerness’ and ‘urgency’ of an eco-friendly environment. Apart from the highly contrast colours used and the smart interactive device installed inside the bins for visually impaired (VI), the simple, attractive and smart design and structure makes it easy to install, replace, repair and manage.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
People can throw recyclables into the bins according to the types of the bins. For VI, their mobile phones will receive messages from the interactive device of the bins telling them the location and the type of the bins when they approach the bins. VI can throw recyclables without touching the bins. For cleaners, they can clear the recyclables by unhooking plastic bags easily from the bins after picking up the bin cover. They can also hook several bags at a time to save efforts.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2014 and finished in August 2014 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
A new hooking system is adopted to secure the plastic bag easily. This eliminates the conventional inner container and saves cleaners extra work. The materials of the bins are recyclable and durable, e.g., recyclable stainless metal sheet or Durapol (body); silicon or Durapol (the openings). The simple form and surface texture assures an easier production, replacement, and easier cleaning. The battery-operated interactive device inside the bins connects to VI’s mobile phone by Bluetooth technology.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Interviews and intensive observations were conducted to understand how people interact with recycling bins. It is found that people tend not to use the bins because the bins were dirty and damaged. The routine work of cleaners and management persons was heavy and time-consuming. The findings gave inspirations in choosing materials, designing the hooking system and the standard components and parts.

CHALLENGE:
The challenging task during the development of the project is to design an attractive appearance which refreshes users’ perceptions about the recycling bins with low cost in system planning. Internal factors include users’ perceptions, emotions and attitudes, and external factors include the design and technology involved. It is believed that an optimal approach has already adopted by Green Hunger.
