DESIGN NAME:
Seesaw spade

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Make spade works easier

INSPIRATION:
It begins from the time when Caesar was in the military army. In military army, Caesar had to do lots of spade works almost everyday. While Caesar do spade works, Caesar had been thinking about how Caesar could make this hard works easier. Among many hardships of spade works, the most difficult and hard thing to do was lifting sands after dig bare ground. Soft ground is okay, but the problem begins when the sands are to many to lift. Because too many sands were on the spade, Caesar could hardly lift the stuck spade. In this case, Caesar used to use his foot or a stone for a support fixture, by using the principle of the lever. After being discharged upon completing his military service, Caesar started to design a spade that is combined with the principle of the lever.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This spade has a support fixture, that has comes from the principle of the lever. When people lift their spade after digging with sands, all they need to do is just pull the spade in their hand behind. By the principle of the lever, the power that peoples push down is transferred to the pulling up the head of spade. At this point, unlikely to the pulling up power, people's pushing down powers can include the gravity, which makes the pushing down power more powerful than pulling up power.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Dig the earth, push the handle, and then the head will arise with dig sands. The point is an added stick at the body frame; a support fixture. With this little change, which does not affects the whole manufacture process of normal spades, the seesaw spade is able to use the principle of the lever, transferring pushing down power with the gravity to the pulling up power at the head of the seesaw spade, having more power to lift the spade up, making people be able to lift more sands with less power and easier action; just pushing down.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project firstly thought in 2013, in Korea military army, alone. Design process started and rendered in November, 2014 in Nottingham, iQ student accomodation.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The materials are simple. Wood for the handle, support fixture, and body, and metal for the head. The seesaw spade is made from the same materials with other spades. The main insight is the principle of the lever. Thanks to the support fixture, The pressure power at the handle transferred to the pulling up power at the head of the spade.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Total scale : Width 225mm X Height 970mm Head scale : Width 225mm X Height 300mm Body scale : Width 32mm X Height 670mm Handle scale : Width 130mm X Height 170mm

TAGS:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Caesar's research is fully based on my experience, when Caesar was in the army. In the army, he measured the whole part of spade, what size is the most effective and convenient to use. Caesar used a normal ruler to measure the actual size of the spade.

CHALLENGE:
Caesar's design starting point is the assumption that everything is possible. Therefore, it is really hard to draw appearance because his answer is always never existed one.
