DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Wetness indicating hanger

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Understand the clothes is dry or not

INSPIRATION:
Once my mom tell to me that it was awful that every time she collects clothes, she need to lower her laundry-drying rack first and check if the clothes were completely dry by hand. If she found it is still wet, she need to elevate the rack again. Sometimes when the moisture is high, it is more difficult to check by hand.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The hanger can tell whether the clothes is dry or not without touch the clothes by finger.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The clothes are hanged on the stainless-steel which is attached on a spring that connects the hook on the top. When the clothes is wet, it will extend the spring based on the weight of the water, and the spring will compress when the water evaporates. After the clothes is dry, the position of the metal bar will elevate, and the elevation of the metal be can be indicated by the window on the body of the hanger very clearly.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
From April 2014 to May 2014.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Idea and Conceptual Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Since the structure is very simple, there are several approaches that can be applied. For example, the hook and the bar can be aluminum alloy or stainless steel processed by extrusion, or even plastic material by injection molding. Our recommended material is PLA for the main body, manufactured by injection molding, aluminum alloy manufactured by extrusion and bending.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Hanger: Width 440mm, Depth 20mm, Height 164mm.

TAGS:
smart, hanger, homeware

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We always need to check the clothes is dry or not by hands. Therefore, is there any better solutions to enhance our understanding without using hands. Then we found that the main difference between dry and wet clothes is their weights.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge is to make the structure as simple as possible to avoid undesirable increase in cost.
