DESIGN NAME: Ronkonkoma
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sculpture
INSPIRATION: A sculptural study in Ronkonkoma, NY, USA to bring the sense of that place into an object; the landscape, street scape, density, and rythm of the place and the emphasis of perspective created by the place, which is ones awareness of their own movements enhanced by the sliding juxtaposition of many trees, utility poles, wires, railway system and buildings.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A 6 sided cube with only 2 different sides and interior exposed. That is, 3 sides with one face composition and 3 sides with another face composition. Sections are the same for 3 different directions X, Y and Z. The view through the object and seeing the side facing the viewer juxtaposed against the opposite side seen through the narrow interior space of the object creates perspective and the sense of movement as the viewer moves even the smallest amount
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The interaction is by observation and movement of the observer. The movement re-creates perspective view and the sense of movement by the sliding juxtaposition of objects near and far. Observation and intrigue. The object has only 2 different types of sides. The mirror like surface creates reflections that reinforce the other interactions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Long Island NY and completed in NY, NY one year later.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To explore a particular location and create a sculpture that contained the sense of that place. Research was conducted in a number of different ways: walking around and exploring the place. photographing areas of interest and and shots that represented consistencies of the place, creating other objects to explore composition of the place, simulate experiences of the place and refine sense of place. The sculpture is a culmination of these studies.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to create the sense of place in an object. The journey to arrive at the conclusion presented here. Extensive research and observation on site. The biggest challenge was to understand that rather banal and depressed appearing place and discover the beauty and unique qualities that give that place it's uniqueness and sense of place exclusive to that place.
