DESIGN NAME: UNIPART Creates any Shape Display
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Shelf
INSPIRATION: The present economical situation and the lack of space at home or office caused me to think of this idea.
In short Unipart is designed;
- To be simple to manufacture
- To be cheap to manufacture
- To be easily assembled
- No need for fixings or tools
- To avoid wastage and eco friendly
- To make the most of available office or home space
- To be stylish
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is an idea designed with both manufacturing and consumer at mind. Uniparts eco design helps to reduce wastage thereby helping the environment.
Unipart gives users the opportunity to create the desired shelf space, in any available space. It can be used on desk to store books and letter or on its own for shoe storage.
Unipart is made of only one panel without the need for any fixings or tools. The user just needs to interlock each panel to the next one. It is simple to assemble by anyone.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The panels are connected to each other by a series of dovetail projection and recess without the need for a tool. These panels are interlocked therefore there is no need for any fixings.
As there are sufficient number of projections on each face, the panels can be connected from any face to any shape the user requires.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Unipart started in May 2012 and finalized in June 2012 in Peterborough.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Unipart is made of hard recycled plastic and manufactured by injection moulding. As there is only one component thereby there is only one manufacturing tool needed.
The plastic can be in any colour.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Unipart can be in different sizes depending on the usage. However for desk usage or stand alone unit as shoe storage can consider the following approximate (A4) dimensions;
- Length 300 mm
- Width 210 mm
- Thickness 10 mm
As this shelf idea is expandable therefore consumers can buy as many parts as they need to design their own unit.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Most my research was done by Google. I also carried out Patent Office research as well.
I wanted to make sure if there were any panels like this one. My patent agent carried out his own search and found nothing.
CHALLENGE: The hardest task was to come up with an interlocking projection and slots. It is not very easy to make prototype of this panel in a basic workshop therefore I had to rely on my engineering know how and my design package to make sure it all makes sense.
