PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Outdoor Lighting

INSPIRATION:
Light is information. Light and brightness draw attention and lead the view. As a result, illuminated areas gain a visual significance and appear more meaningful than darker ones. For a lighting design project, this means that only those architectural elements should be highlighted, which are crucial for understanding the space and really ARE meaningful. Accidentally illuminating nearby areas, too, would mean to attach an unjustified importance to them. Lighting design is also shadow design. If there is no visual hierarchy of elements, the perception of space is without focus. A second thought is the perception of brightness. The human eye perceives levels of brightness as a contrast and not as numerical values. Thus, an outdoor illumination should be dimmable, allowing it to respond to the light conditions of twilight and black night. If the environment is more and more shrouded in darkness, also the lighting design must slowly weaken in order to avoid causing glare.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Being designed for the 26th Summer World University Games, the Universiade Sports Center in Shenzhen, China, is a building complex consisting of a stadium, a multifunctional hall, a swimming hall and an extensive landscape park. As the day and night appearance of the sports buildings is dominated by a strict crystalline shape, the lighting design concept was focused on illuminating the translucent fabric evenly. Integrated within the steel structure, LED light lines provide a dimmable uniform backlight to vary the intensity. Thus, to save energy and to harmonize with the surrounding landscape throughout the night, the crystal shapes will shine brightly at twilight and will slowly die down until midnight. Although the RGB-LEDs can be adjusted in their colour, the normal operation is white. The luminaires are constructed in such a way that the light sources of the sensitive facade lighting are not in the least visible, no matter from which angle they are seen. Otherwise, the clear structure would vanish, as the soft reflexion of the light would be superimposed by glaring light spots. The connecting paths between the buildings are illuminated by plain, unobtrusive luminaires with warm colour temperatures and good colour rendering qualities. The luminaires are strictly constructed according to the geometry of the space, without scattered radiation towards close-by areas which otherwise would receive an unintended attraction. The creation of such ”calm spaces” which do not receive any direct radiation allows the visitors to relax their eyes by relying on their most sensible perception of soft light reflexions in pleasing darkness.

PROFILE:
We are perception planners! Founded in 1990 by Helmut Angerer, Conceptlicht is a lighting design office that plans and realizes lighting design projects all over the world. Our approach to lighting design is the connection of visual perception and the impact of light on humans with architectural aspects in respect of technical regulations. Our goal is to create comfortable atmospheres. Consequently, the aim is not to reach a certain amount of light, but rather to translate the desired perception of space into lighting design. In the end, lighting design is the design of the perceptual image. It is essential that the hierarchy of spatial elements is supported by light, creating a corresponding hierarchy of luminance dependent on functional and esthetical aspects.
