PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Home ware - cushion design

INSPIRATION:
I got my inspiration for this design from family and friends.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Motivated and inspired by the fashion world, chie chie begins to apply her illustrations on fabric and wallpaper. She then combines her graphic design and illustration skills to custom design her first collection of cushion and wallpaper in 2010. A new avenue is explored and so the creative process begins. The design philosophy behind her range is based on the friendships, inspirations, enrichments and uncondition love bestowed on her generously from friends and family. Therefore, each cushion is uniquely and thoughtfully desinged to reflect the personality of her friends and family which manifest beautifully on fabrics. The composition in every cushion consists of retro graphic elements and fauvist’s colours that is not just pleasing to the eyes but will give a ‘wow’ factor to your living room and simply transform your living space into a sophiscated edgy urban interior as if have been revived by a stylish interior designer.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
In my case, Chie Chie's high end cushion design collection starting off with 2 collections of 5 designs each ( the first collection will only come in 40 by 40 cm cushion cover and the second collection will be in 2 sizes 50 by 50 cm cushion cover and 60 by 60 cushion cover), begin with design process (1 week) in Brisbane in July 2010, source fabric for sublimation (3 days) in Brisbane, send design to printer for sublimation in sydney (1 week), send artwork for label printing (1 week) in Brisbane, source all necessary accessories and cushion inserts for cushion cover (3 days) in Brisbane, production for sewing cushion cover sample(1 week) follow by production for 100 cushions (3 weeks) in Brisbane, completion for whole project estimated time (3 months), price tags, business card, packaging and other promotional materials to be printed and ready for selling stage. The production location all took place in Australia and a total of 4 months for production to be completed rather than 3 months. Completion stage was in October, 2010 for my production team and now I am in the process of designing the third collection of cushion and starting on my first collection of tea towels (inclines towards homeware direction) and incorporate my marketing strategies for media exposure and prepare myself for Hong Kong Houseware Fair 2011 in April.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Design and Production cycle: 1. Design and Production Brief: initiates design and production cycle, outline what you want to achieve, the scope of work, who is responsible and the key dates (start and completion dates). For example, high end cushion design collection starting off with 10 designs (10 of each design), begin with design process (1 week) in Brisbane, source fabric for sublimation (3 days) in Brisbane, send design to printer for sublimation in sydney (1 week), send artwork for label printing (1 week) in Brisbane, source all necessary accessories and cushion inserts for cushion cover (3 days) in Brisbane, production for sewing cushion cover sample(1 week) follow by production for 100 cushions (3 weeks) in Brisbane, completion for whole project estimated time (3 months), price tags, business card, packaging and other promotional material to be printed and ready for selling stage. 2. Production Plan: integrates the design and manufacturing process with the gift calender to produce production schedule. The plan should enable you to co ordinate the design and production cycle to ensure your collection is designed and manufactured to your quality standards and to achieve sales and production deadlines. Flexibility , lead time and monitor production control and maufacturing quality. 3. Research and Sourcing: Fabric sourcing from textile and fabric trade shows i.e Texworld (usa) and Premiere Vision (paris), textile mills, textile converters, fabric representatives and agents, fabric wholesalers, fabric jobbers. Or local fabric agents in brisbane. 4. Minimum, Sample, Fabric and Production Costs: calculate all the production cost whether its closed to estimate costs. calculate sample costs. Outsource to Ditto Design to manufacture a small production run for the first 60 cushion designs. Might consider to pay higher production costs for the first run to achieve high quality and up market cushions and accept a smaller profit margin to stay in the market. 5. Design development: integrate market and trend research with creativity and innovation skills. 1. Sourcing fabric starting with a fabric swatch. 2. Begin designing your collection after research on interior design and funiture design. 3. Create specification sheet for individual design which contains technical drawing, drawn to scale with construction line and styling details, front and back view, specification and key mesurements, label positions, stitching details and any special requirements (embroidery, buttons, etc). 4. Fabric to be sublimated, designs to be completed. 5. First sample to be made. 6. Work out production costs for the quantity you need. 7. Finalise collection

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research Objectives: 1. History of cushion 2. Cushions and soft furnishing usages in today’s society 3. Based on the findings from the report of Consumer Lifestyles in Australia by Euromonitor International 2009, I am able to create a product development brief, profile my target audience by segmenting and identify my target market and also to develop a marketing strategies by evealuating the current status of the product and potential growth. 4. Conduct market research and collect information and data about my target market and its needs and attitudes toward my products and concepts. This ensures that my product launch in the market place and promotional campaigns are succesful and profitable for my design company. 5. Evaluation for my product and its packaging. 6. Research on the Design of promotion brochure, business card and other promotional materials to integrate with marketing strategies for lifestyle concept retail stores in Australia and trade fair in Australia and overseas.

CHALLENGE:
The creative/research challenge is not so much on the design and production stage for myself personally, i have experienced more challenges towards the selling and marketing stage in my business.
