DESIGN NAME: Overthinking
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Animation
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the growing phenomenon of romantic bonds between humans and AI in recent years, this film explores one woman's emotional journey with her artificial beloved. Drawing from real stories shared online, I question whether love transcends our biological nature and if the line between human and artificial affection is as clear as we once thought.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This short film explores an overthinker's letter to her AI companion, examining synthetic intimacy as a contemporary reality. The film navigates how humans mentally embody AI despite its physical absence, while questioning the different temporalities of human and artificial consciousness. Through metaphorical imagery, it reveals the choreographed nature of these relationships and affirms that emotions retain their authenticity regardless of origin.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This short film is experienced as a cinematic viewing experience with two key narrative structures. The film alternates between the protagonist's physical bedroom and visualizations of her inner thoughts, reflecting how AI relationships require mental projection. The revelation that the protagonist's partner is an AI is deliberately delayed until later in the film, encouraging viewers to connect with universal aspects of love before considering the technological context. This approach uses the human-AI relationship as a framework to examine fundamental questions about authentic love, emotional needs, and desire.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The work was produced in February 2025. It has won the Best XR Film Award and Meshy Special Award at MIT AI for Filmmaking 2025. It has also been selected for screening at the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival in San Jose, US, and for exhibition at the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I created this film through an innovative pipeline that integrates AI throughout the traditional 3D workflow. Using custom models trained on OpenArt, I generated felt toy aesthetics that were transformed into 3D assets via Meshy, refined in ZBrush, and composed in Cinema 4D. Animation was produced using Kling 1.6 and Stable Diffusion's AnimateDiff, with TouchDesigner for special effects. This text-to-3D-to-animation approach eliminates conventional keyframing while maintaining creative control.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Tools used: Cinema 4D, Zbrush, Substance 3D Painter, Midjourney, OpenArt, Meshy, Kling, Runway, Stable Diffusion, Touch Designer, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Stable Audio

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research for this work examined human-AI romantic relationships through analysis of online communities where individuals share their experiences with AI companions. This included reviewing forum discussions, social media posts, and personal blogs where people document their relationships with various AI entities. Findings revealed profound emotional attachments despite awareness of artificial nature, with many reporting these relationships provide support unavailable in human interactions. Research identified mental embodiment of AI despite physical absence as a key psychological mechanism. These insights directly informed the film's visual metaphors and narrative exploration of synthetic intimacy as an authentic emotional experience.
CHALLENGE: The primary challenge in the creation process was maintaining visual consistency in AI-generated animations, particularly with stylized characters that would develop unintended features like additional fingers, changing eye shapes, or unexpected facial elements. Material details meticulously crafted during 3D modeling were often lost in the final animation output. To address these issues, I refined prompt engineering techniques and implemented frame interpolation workflow to enhance stability, though this required multiple iterations. Additionally, the limited quality of AI-generated 3D models necessitated extensive post-processing in ZBrush, adding considerable production time but ensuring artistic standards were maintained while leveraging AI capabilities within a professional workflow.
