DESIGN NAME: Ember Lion
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Candle
INSPIRATION: This project is inspired by the deep respect for traditional taiwanese lion dance culture and the performers who dedicate themselves to this art form. Despite the widespread admiration for lion dance, performers often face social biases and misconceptions. The aim was to challenge these biases by shedding light on the unseen dedication behind the performances, offering a fresh perspective on this valuable cultural expression.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design integrates traditional taiwanese lion dance with modern concepts. The candle’s exterior features a lion dance sculpture, and as it melts, a hidden performer gradually reveals itself. This process symbolizes the overlooked hard work and dedication of the performers behind the lion dance. The design stands out due to its unique ability to combine artistic expression with cultural commentary, providing both an aesthetic and emotional experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To operate, simply light the candle. As it burns, the exterior lion dance sculpture melts, revealing the hidden performer inside. This transformation is symbolic, offering viewers a chance to reflect on the dedication and effort behind lion dance performances. The interaction with the candle is not only visual but also emotionally resonant, as the melting process reflects the continuity and evolution of cultural traditions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in january 2024 and was completed in march 2025 in taipei, taiwan. It was exhibited at the taipei design exhibition in march 2025. The development process included research, design iteration, and prototyping, followed by the final production stage. The candle was showcased to highlight its unique fusion of cultural symbolism and modern design, and to offer a new perspective on traditional performance arts.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design utilizes advanced wax sculpting techniques, where multiple layers of wax in different colors are carefully combined to form the lion dance figure. As the candle burns, the exterior melts, unveiling a hidden performer. The process of melting is precisely controlled to ensure smooth transitions and a visually engaging experience. The choice of materials and methods ensures both aesthetic appeal and functional performance.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of the candle are 150mm in height, 100mm in width, and 100mm in depth. It is crafted from high-quality wax, with multi-layered colors to enhance the visual depth of the lion dance sculpture. The packaging is designed to protect the candle during transit and is made from eco-friendly materials. The technical design ensures controlled melting, ensuring the visual effect is seamless and well-executed.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design explores the social perceptions surrounding Taiwanese lion dance performers, particularly addressing the biases they face. The research involved interviewing performers, observing live performances, and analyzing historical and cultural texts. The findings reveal the need for greater respect and recognition of these artists, and the design serves as both a commentary and a tool for cultural reflection, encouraging a more positive and appreciative view of traditional performers.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging aspect of this design was addressing the cultural biases that often marginalize lion dance performers. Balancing traditional cultural elements with contemporary design while ensuring that the artwork communicated respect and understanding for the performers was a delicate process. Technical challenges included ensuring precise wax sculpting and controlling the melting process to reveal the performer at the right moment without compromising the design integrity.
