PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: PASSPORT KNITSKIN stands out in the market due to its originality. During the research and development phase, our design team experimented with various materials before selecting SMARTCEL Sensitive—an eco-friendly cellulose fiber enriched with zinc oxide, which offers protective, antibacterial, and nurturing benefits. We also chose Lyocell Seacell, a patented eco-friendly fiber derived from natural seaweed, produced through a sustainable closed-loop method that generates no chemical waste and is 100% biodegradable.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Design - We spent 5 months to conduct qualitative research study and participatory design workshop in order to explore the content and design details to be included in this present collaborative project, as we aim to promote active travelling and offers individuals chances to engage with new cultures and perspectives, enhancing their understanding of themselves and the world - finally, local district which was full of subculture - Sham Shui Po (SSP) was chosen. It was also the new location for Hong Kong Design Centre took place.
The Sustainable Material - The materials used are not only sustainable but also feature anti-bacterial properties, supporting global environmental issues and encouraging behavioral changes in the wake of COVID-19. SMARTCEL Sensitive is vital for our immune system, providing protection against harmful UVA/UVB rays that can damage skin cells. It also boasts odor-minimizing properties that keep textiles feeling fresh. Meanwhile, Lyocell Seacell fibers are made from low-resource, eco-friendly, and 100% biodegradable natural materials.
CHALLENGE: The design adheres to the standard size and format of a typical passport, minimizing waste of both space and materials. Our unique knitting technique allows for varied textures on the same surface, enhancing the tactile experience for travelers. This design also enables the incorporation of visual elements on both sides, allowing for a full appreciation of the graphics when the PASSPORT KNITSKIN is opened. We spent plenty of time to adjust the actual visualization of the graphic pattern due to combination of various materials when knitted together.
