DESIGN NAME: Tranquil Circlet
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fashion Accessory
INSPIRATION: Inspired by traditional Chinese philosophy, this cuff embodies the essence of "Square and Round," symbolizing completeness and balance. The hammered nickel inner circle artfully mimics wood grain, while the copper outer layer, designed in a square with Ming Dynasty wave patterns, evokes rhythm and order.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The coexistence of square and round highlights a sense of balance and harmony. Concealed acrylic colors within the black square subtly represent the depth of Confucian philosophy. Xinzi aims to craft a stunning and functional piece of art, showcasing the beauty of harmony in Chinese culture.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Bracelets are usually in a round shape, but this bracelet looks like a square with only three sides which can’t stay on the wrist. This is a bold innovation on the shape. But the internal round shape fits the wrist very well and it is comfortable when worn. At the same time, the design of the ribbon allows users to customize it, wrap it around the wrist or hang freely, creates different styles.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2020 in New York, Brooklyn and finished in June 2020 in New York, Brooklyn

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main purpose was to express ancient Asian culture through modern mainstream art forms. I don’t want to use the traditional shapes and forms of the past. So I borrowed the ancient Confucian idea of a square circle as the main shape. At the same time, I also extracted the colors commonly used in ancient Asian murals as part of the work. However, Confucianism emphasizes subtlety, so I hid the colors inside the work so that they can be seen but are not conspicuous at the same time. The black created by patina technique created smooth surface, while acrylic hand-painted has a natural pigment texture, creating a contrast. It expresses the impact and combination of ancient civilization and modern art.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to transfer an abstract concept into the physical piece.
Being figurative will loose the artistic beauty while being too abstract may goes away from the theme.
I used the square and circle as the main shape. The texture on the small circle is hidden under the large square and seen through the carved patterns on outer square layer. Unique colors was inspired from the ancient murals, and hand painted under the large square. It is a pure black piece viewed from the front, while the side can show faintly visible colors. It shows the implicit nature of Asian art.
