DESIGN NAME: Garden Lamp
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bedside Lamp
INSPIRATION: This project stems from a profound admiration for the timeless beauty and symbolism found in Asian gardens. Motivated by the desire to infuse furniture with soulful artistry, I drew inspiration from the intricate flow of water, the serenity of Zen principles, and the harmonious elegance of flower arrangement.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: My concept reimagines furniture as dynamic art, echoing the harmony and depth of Asian gardens. Through interactive lighting, my designs foster playful interaction with the environment, evoking a meditative ambiance. Inspired by floral arrangements, I integrate light in a harmonious dance, activating upon insertion into the table surface. Serenity emanates from the warm glow at the heart, invoking tranquility. Curved surfaces and varied glass textures infuse a delightful randomness.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Operating this object is effortless and intuitive: Users simply insert the glass ball into the designated hole to activate the light, akin to placing flowers in a vase. As the light illuminates, the arrangement adopts a mesmerizing glow. To turn off the light, users can simply place the glass ball into shallower, unlit compartments, seamlessly integrating the function with the aesthetic display.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2023 and finished in May 2023 in Providence.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The production process begins with raw soft maple wood, which undergoes milling to achieve the desired thickness. Using a table saw, the wood is precisely cut into pieces. Handblown glass elements add a touch of craftsmanship. Small components are crafted via 3D printing, designed in Rhino software. Intricate electronic circuits are meticulously assembled, with self-soldering of all parts. LED light bulbs are integrated for illumination. Soft maple veneer is self-made, employing a traditional method: each layer is cut on a table saw, layer them with glue between then press them all on self-made plywood mold.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimension: 200mm x 200mm x 230mm
Wood surface finish: Odie’s Oil

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research Type: Exploratory study integrating Chinese garden culture into furniture design.
Objectives: Fuse cultural symbolism with contemporary design.
Methodology: Background research, conceptualization, observation, Iteration, prototyping, technical drawing, fabrication, user testing, feedbacks from peers for further reflection.
Data collection involved literature review, cultural studies, and visual analysis of Chinese gardens. Research tools included mood boards, sketches, 3D modeling software (e.g., Rhino), physical prototyping materials (e.g., clay, wood), and fabrication equipment (e.g., CNC machines, glass blowing tools).
