| DESIGN NAME: NUO PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hat decoration INSPIRATION: NUO draws inspiration from traditional Chinese Nuo opera culture, an ancient ritualistic activity for blessing and worship that is fading away. To pass down this cultural heritage to younger generations and blend it with modern elements, designers base their hat decoration designs on the facial expressions and blessings depicted in Nuo opera masks. In a unique and expressive manner, they aim to convey the cultural significance and essence of this fading tradition. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This initiative focuses on promoting Chinese Nuo opera culture, revitalizing the handicraft market, fostering economic growth in remote areas, and offering employment opportunities for women in mountainous regions. The NUO product allows DIY transformation of old hats, minimizing waste and providing users with a platform to express their unique style through personalized hat designs. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2023 in Taipei and finished in January 2024 in Chongqing. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: NUO chose to use fabric embroidery craftsmanship for handmade production in order to provide employment opportunities for women in mountainous areas while simultaneously reducing costs and simplifying the manufacturing process. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The product dimensions are length 60mm, width 55mm, and the packaging dimensions are length 120mm, width 80mm. Data collection is carried out using tools such as survey questionnaires, targeting female participants in the mountainous regions. The research findings indicate that the project facilitates employment growth and enhances the skill levels of women. This initiative has a positive impact on business, boosting cultural recognition while simultaneously improving the livelihoods of women, thereby achieving a dual influence on both business and society. CHALLENGE: One of the challenges faced by the project is to make breakthroughs in exploring handmade craftsmanship while simultaneously developing a low-cost, replicable production method.In the design approach, it is crucial to consider the sensitivity of the ritual culture, exploring a design that not only respects tradition but also avoids compromising the interests of all parties involved.In the design proposal, it is essential to consider the sensitivity of ritual culture, exploring an approach that both respects tradition and avoids harming the interests of all parties involved.
