DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Dancing Duo

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sculpture

INSPIRATION:
Dancing Duo was inspired by the circumstances of human suffering and hardship arising from global pandemic and conflict at the time of its conception. Whilst isolation and longing for harmony and peace are a human reality in difficult times, through dance, bodies and souls draw closer, conveying intense emotions to one another and to our world. The work celebrates compassion, unity and human resilience through a sculptural pairing of forms united harmoniously by a discrete single base.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A unique sculpture crafted from layered aluminium, with a UV printed pattern, set on a steel mirrored base. This design was created in a year of global conflict and immense human suffering. The sculpture portrays the intertwined dance of two forms, conveying profound longing and emotion in response to the prevailing socio-political circumstances. The smooth rhythm of the pattern flows between the two organic shapes, evoking the movement of a passionate dance.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A unique sculpture made with layered aluminium sheets which are coated with a digitally-printed pattern that links the two forms, fixed to a single mirrored base. The patterns are meticulously arranged on each layer, creating a captivating visual experience. The comprehensive and delicate fusion of patterns and form allows viewers to appreciate the ever-changing pattern details from all angles.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2023 in Taipei, Taiwan, and finished in August 2023 in Taipei. The sculpture was first exhibited at Shoppe Object in New York City, USA, in August 2023 and subsequently at Gallery Cho, Taipei, in September and October 2023, and at Maison and Objet, Paris, France in January 2024.

Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The pattern was created using a bespoke software, mov.i.see, which responds to body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. It was finished by hand to manipulate colour and form, then UV printed on aluminium layers. Sculpting was trialled and tested in digital software to control gradients between layers and adjust the pattern flow. The pieces were hand-cut, assembled and reinforced with copper tubing, anchored by a steel base.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 300mm x Depth 600mm (l, base) x Height 420mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We create unique patterns using a bespoke digital software programme which uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. Inspired by the coronavirus pandemic and global conflict, we created and applied a new pattern to a sculptural form that celebrates compassion and resilience. The sculpting was trialled and tested in digital software, digitally manufactured and finished by hand. The work has been exhibited internationally.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to control the sculptural form to achieve an ambiguous state between abstraction and realism, while also ensuring precise printing of pattern on the complex aluminium layers. Additionally, creating a forward-leaning posture for the two forms required careful calculation of the number and placement of copper rod cores, balancing aesthetics with structural integrity, which significantly complicated manual assembly.
