DESIGN NAME: Rocks on Wheels
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Art Playground
INSPIRATION: Huge boulders rest on seemingly flimsy domestic-scale dollies and rolled haphazardly into a paved public plaza. Twisted steel protrudes from the 300 tons of locally-sourced bluestone boulders and retro-style steel playground equipment appears casually lashed between as if local families have done a DIY weekend modification to a public plaza.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A hybrid functional playground and art sculpture park that brings rough natural forms into a small park in a densely-populated city block. This risk-positive and inclusive playground challenges play design norms and exhibits world-class excellence in durability and the maximising of play-value on a small site. It is a complex and immersive environment that caters to all ages, including adults, for rostering intergenerational connections in a manner that encourages healthy exploration of risk.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Public park open 24/7, designed as an intergeneration playground
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in mid 2018 and opened in November 2022 in Southbank, Melbourne, Australia

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Several innovations made this iconic park possible:
1. High-strength and durable stainless dolly structure that perfectly mimicked a domestic furniture dolly while being capable of supporting >5 ton each and durable for permanent outdoor use (50+ year design life)
2. Durable fall-attenuating rubber surfacing that mimicked bluestone paving. Tested to passed the highest possible fall-rating (3 metres)
3. Durable bluestone boulders and galvanised steel
