DESIGN NAME: Boop
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Robot Assistant
INSPIRATION: Rethinking artificial intelligence and robotics with the aim to create a new type of assistant, capable of easing daily struggles and loneliness of the elderly. The concept elevates a common shopping trolley into an electronic helper, while combining functionalities of a seniors walker and a voice assistant. The stylized form resembling a penguin chick escapes the uncanny valley of humanoid robots. It represents a creature inspired by nature, yet shaped with new technologies.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Boop is an autonomous electronic vehicle designed to help the elderly with their daily tasks. Capable of storing and delivering groceries, providing walking support and storage space on walks. It offers companionship to the user with built-in voice assistant and chatbot functions using Natural Language Processing AI.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user interacts with the robot through voice commands and chatbot conversation, making it easy for older people to adjust to and understand the new technology. Depending on the users current needs it can switch modes between autonomous delivery, walking support and following the user. Adjusting of the handle, walking support mode and storage packing are manually operated, while the rest of the features are all controlled through vocal interactions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was developed throughout 2023 as part of industrial design studies at the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade under the supervision of professor Marko Lukovic

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main body of the product is made from injection molded polycarbonate, with a built in LED display in a weather resistant enclosure. The axle, three wheel construction and wheel rims are made from aluminium. The foam covered aluminium pipe offers a comfortable grip on the adjustable handle. The aluminium parts of the robot are powder coated white. The tires are solid rubber, suitable for rough terrain.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions of the whole robot: 700 mm x 580 mm x 900 mm
(additional 100 mm of height with the handle extended)
Volume of the: front storage space: 27 l; back storage space: 19 l

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The current marketplace for elderly care robots focuses on assistance in nursing homes, yet only 2-5% of elderly have access to them. In doing so it dismisses the majority of elderly people living alone or in pairs, where loneliness and the lack of healthy physical activity are at their most detrimental. Research focused on understanding their daily struggles, the effects that isolation and lack of mental stimulation have on their mental decline and ways of overcoming them.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was creating a product that is self sufficient enough so that it does not create more problems than it solves. Creating something that makes being old and independent easier. It was important for the user to be able to interact with it intuitively. The design needed to be endearing and approachable, yet compact and technically capable of overcoming urban obstacles, providing enough storage space and adjustability for a comfortable user experience.
