DESIGN NAME: Memory
PRIMARY FUNCTION: NFC-based reminder set
INSPIRATION: Some define forgetfulness as the end of life. Memory aims to address the challenges faced by Alzheimer's patients. According to the World Health Organization, over 55 million have Alzheimer's, expected to reach 139 million by 2050. With no cure, this disease not only robs millions of people of their memories but also deprives them of independence and dignity in life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Memory comes with a necklace, a ring, tags, and a charging case. Tags and rings utilise Near Field Communication technology to identify information, while the necklace employs Augmented Reality technology to provide information feedback in the form of voice, assisting patients in evoking memories and independently managing their daily lives.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Children of Alzheimer's patients pre-record reminders (such as medication details) into the system. When the patient wears the ring approaching medicine bottles with Near Field Communication tags, the necklace's speaker then plays the reminders (such as You have already taken the medicine; please retake it after a 5-hour interval), helping evoke the patient's memories and facilitating independent living.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2023 and finished in December 2023 at University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The user's children input reminders into the app using recording technology. The app stores these reminders in the tags through Near Field Communication technology. The ring uses Near Field Communication technology to read and identify the information in the tags and then transmit it to the necklace via Bluetooth technology. The necklace employs Augmented Reality technology to play the reminders as voice prompts, providing Alzheimer's patients with information about their daily tasks.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Tags (15mm*0.1mm*17mm), ring(21mm*20mm*4mm), necklace(40mm*12mm*40mm), charging case (70mm*10mm*70mm). The overall packaging of the product features a semi-wrapped layout. The ring is designed with notches and made from silicone material, making it adaptable to various finger widths. The overall design is simple, gentle, and embraces a universal concept, allowing Alzheimer's patients to experience dignity in their use.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through interviews and observation of Alzheimer's patients and their children, the research found that patients were unable to live independently due to memory loss and felt guilty for being a burden on their families. Insight shows through user testing, simple voice prompts can effectively evoke the memory of mild to moderate patients. The research shows a positive impact in aiding patients in memory recall, life management and gaining dignity.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge of this design lies in how to evoke the memory of patients while ensuring that users are not subjected to discrimination and can experience a sense of dignity during use. To achieve this goal, the product incorporates Near Field Communication technology and Augmented Reality technology, with an overall design emphasising simplicity and universality.
