PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Smart Patch

INSPIRATION:
According to statistics, about one seventh of adults worldwide face health risks and death threats caused by obstructive sleep apnea. However, traditional therapeutic products on the market that focus on continuous positive airway pressure therapy require the user to wear an uncomfortable mask connected to a noisy desktop air pump. This leads to a decrease in sleep quality combined with bloating, skin irritation and dry respiratory tract.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Asleep is an intelligent patch for obstructive sleep apnea patients. Compared with traditional treatment like continuous positive airway pressure, it greatly improving the comfort. The EMG module attached to the jaw timely stimulates the genioglossus muscle, ensuring an unobstructed airway during sleep. The neck-side sensor monitors heart rate and blood oxygen, issuing alerts for life-threatening respiratory pauses. Users can view sleep quality reports and adjust program settings via the app.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The EMG module centered on the mandible, and two neck side modules covering the carotid artery constitute this compact wearable. The patch affixed along the jawbone, fits various sizes due to its stretchable pattern. This smart patch monitors physiological parameters, generating sleep reports via the app. In the event of breathing pauses, the EMG module stimulates the genioglossal muscle. Prolonged life-threatening pauses trigger vibrations and alarms to awaken the user and alert those nearby.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in December 2023 and finished in February 2024 at University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Made by flexible fabric and replaceable medical hydrogel tape, the patch integrates stretchable circuits in the interlayer to connect three modules in rubber bases. The shell is made by polycarbonate plastic and house electronic components. The electrodes of EMG module stimulate genioglossus muscle, while PPG module assess heart rate and pulse oximetry. Battery module guarantees uninterrupted power throughout sleep. Bluetooth links modules to a mobile application.

Unstretched patch fabric area, 120 mm x 120 mm. Fabric thickness, 2mm. EMG module, 36 mm x 20 mm x 14 mm. Neck-side PPG module and battery module, 30 mm x 20 mm x 14 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The severe health risks posed by obstructive sleep apnea have sparked a pressing need for effective daily treatments. Home products, primarily based on CPAP therapy, lack comfort and convenience. Through literature research, we compared alternative therapies and feasible mediums. This led to the concept of Asleep, a lightweight design integrating electrical stimulation therapy and physiological parameter monitoring into a wearable patch, aiming to alleviate OSA while ensuring user safety.

CHALLENGE:
1.To accommodate the flexibility and stretchability of the patch, the interlayer circuit of the smart fabric adopts a continuous arc shape to prevent breakage. 2.The compact and lightweight module design presents challenges for the rational integration of PCB and other components. 3.The application of electrical stimulation therapy and the scenario of close skin contact necessitate careful consideration of the conductivity and skin-friendliness in selecting materials for different components.

The industrial design programme of UNNC is affiliated to the department of Materials Mechanical and Manufacturing, Faculty of Science and Engineering.
