DESIGN NAME: Releaf
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Germinable Electric Longboard
INSPIRATION: Digital and fast-paced lifestyles stress urban dwellers. I aim to reconnect them with their cities through enjoyable street sports like skateboarding, uncovering new allure in familiar settings for relaxation. Inspired by the achievement felt from worn skateboards, I sought a practical use for them. "Releaf" combines the thrill of urban exploration with the satisfaction of germinating seeds from wear, through a unique seed-embedded electric longboard design, enriching urban life while genuinely contributing to environmental greening.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "Releaf" enhances urban skating with electric assist, exceptional shock absorption, safety lighting, and adaptive accessories for ultimate comfort and fun. Its unique, seed-embedded deck germinates after frequent use, ingeniously blending entertainment with urban greening. "Releaf" not only enriches the skating experience but also inspires a deeper engagement with environmental conservation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: "Releaf" Electric Longboard auto-adjusts to your kicks for easy riding. Perfect for beginners, it features modular handlebars and seats with red quick-release handles for simple changes. Attach the handlebar to manually adjust speed or select gears, or use the electric assist. Wear creates unique cracks in the board, decreasing elasticity. Once fully cracked, give it light and water to sprout plants. This board can be a home green ornament or transplanted to aid urban greening.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2023 and finished in February 2024 in Beijing.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The "Releaf" Electric Longboard features a hub motor with Hall sensors, capturing real-time wheel motion for smooth, remote-less acceleration. Its deck, made from recycled fibers and epoxy resin, undergoes heat pressing before receiving a seed-infused coating for future growth. Tires, designed in Grasshopper with a dust-capturing lattice structure, are produced from recyclable plastic through SLA 3D printing. Its metal frame, crafted via SLS 3D printing, enhances the skateboard's natural aesthetics.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Xiaohongshu, a leading Chinese lifestyle platform, used big data and interviews to find that the pandemic-induced social media fatigue has redirected attention to nearby people and things. The preference for outdoor activities and local leisure due to economic factors emerged. Motivated by these findings, I aim to enhance urban relaxation and entertainment with a more free-spirited mode of transport.
CHALLENGE: My project aimed to reinvent the electric skateboard, blending it seamlessly with the essence of traditional skateboarding culture. It sought to transform this urban street sport into a fashionable medium for sustainable city living, inviting individuals to partake in environmental conservation stylishly. While adhering to design aesthetics, the project aimed to enhance the playability and safety of electric skateboards.
