DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Muza

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Synesthetic Music Player

INSPIRATION:
This design represents a novel music player that aims to integrate auditory, olfactory, and visual experiences. Inspired by the form of a cracked egg, its exterior features a semi transparent shell allowing internal lighting to shine through, harmonizing with the illuminated aromatherapy misting ports.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The synesthetic music player is an innovative design that integrates auditory, olfactory, and visual experiences for stress relief and mood enhancement. This multi sensory approach aims to create a relaxing and rejuvenating ambiance, leveraging the synergy of technology and sensory stimulation.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Within the device, three separate aroma chambers are filled with distinct fragrances. During operation, the device automatically identifies the playing music and adjusts the misting speed of each aroma chamber based on variations in pitch, volume, and tone. This process creates unique scents tailored to each piece of music, accompanied by synchronized changes in lighting.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project started on 2021 in Italy, finished on January, 2024, in Portugal.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The player features three aroma chambers, each equipped with a ceramic atomizer and independently controlled by internal programming. During music playback, the device identifies three key musical attributes and adjusts the misting speed of the aroma chambers accordingly. Simultaneously, the RGB lighting within the device synchronizes with the music, creating a multisensory experience that enhances the user's enjoyment of the music.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
360mm*300mm*300mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This project introduces a synesthetic music player, offering a novel direction and concept for future home living. Unlike conventional methods, this device emits scents tailored to various music genres in real-time, creating a multisensory journey that enhances the listener's engagement. This innovative approach not only enriches the music listening experience but also opens up new avenues for exploring the intersection of sensory perception and technology in everyday life.

CHALLENGE:
Achieving real time scent modulation to correspond with the nuances of each piece of music presented a significant challenge. After extensive research and numerous iterations, a viable design solution was established. This solution involved the implementation of three independently controlled aroma chambers to meet the functional requirements of the design. This approach was deemed most effective in synchronizing scent variations with the dynamic elements of the music.
