DESIGN NAME: Braille challenger
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Blind Child learing
INSPIRATION: Inspired by pin art and observing the gap between existing toys and educational tools for blind children, we aimed to create a product that merges learning and joy. Drawing inspiration from playful games like whack-a-mole and stress-relief bubble wrap, our design resembles a sleek, foldable pencil case with a minimalist triangular form. Magnetic walls ensure easy storage, making it ideal for group use.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Compared to the most technologically advanced hydraulic electronic Braille version on the market, this device uses individual air pressure and valves, resulting in lower technology levels and production costs. Its main difference lies in its interactivity, entertainment value, and competitiveness, encouraging children to learn through play and competition. It offers voice response and automatic error correction features, ensuring accurate learning even without parental or teacher guidance.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Teaching Mode: The device reads a text aloud and displays braille for one minute. Learners write independently, with the system prompting errors and recording the error rate.
Practice Mode: Learners write sentences in braille and listen to them read aloud for self-checking.
Challenge Mode: Activates after one hour and lasts for 20 minutes. The learner selects a level, and upon starting, the challenge device reads out the word pronunciation. The learner then enters the corresponding letters. Rankings are based on total time in each level.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2024 in Taiwan and finished in February 2024 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We use anti-allergenic silicone on the raised spots of the braille boards, which are controlled by air pressure. Vision-impaired users can press the dots with a Braille stylus to raise them. The overall HDPE construction ensures durability. Charging is done through the Type-C port and is compatible with magnetic chargers. The outer box comes with a magnetic buckle for easy storage. Both silicone and HDPE components can be recycled at factories, promoting sustainability.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Leaning machine : 297 x 210 x 30 mm
Game console : 60 x 88 x 25 mm
TAGS: Blind children, teaching aids, happy learning, human-computer interaction, independent learning, classmate competition, easy storage
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Based on correlational research, utilizing data from Google Scholar, Chat GPT, and domestic indicators in Taiwan, we have identified a worsening issue for congenitally blind children. Due to heavy reliance on auditory learning, many of them are reluctant to learn Braille, resulting in a Braille literacy rate of less than 7% among blind individuals, with less than 25% having attained a junior high school level education. We aim to design a product to address this problem.
