DESIGN NAME: Curvy
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vase
INSPIRATION: The inspiration behind this vase stemmed from the intricate folds and crevices found in the human body, specifically that of a seated figure. The design aimed to capture both the deep crevices and interesting folds that the human form possesses, while omitting any visible limbs. Instead, the vase showcases the neck and body of the figure, revealing different folds at various angles reminiscent of the organic contours found in the human form when seated.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An abstract organic volume resembling a sitting figure that starts from and ends in a circle. It is orange on the outside to have a warm tone of color like the skin and features a complementary shiny blue glaze on the inside that represents the cooler toned inner body. Although the nuance is quite silent, the vase has a front and a back side.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When adorned with a bouquet of flowers, the vase feels completed. The flowers make it feel like the head of the figure and create an abstract but fulfilled body shape.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project was part of our collection for year 2020.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The intricately crafted vase, reminiscent of the works of artistic pioneers who delved into the intricacies of human anatomy through their paintings and sculptures, embodies a minimalist exploration of the human form. It serves as a display of the sculptural design inherent in the human body.
CHALLENGE: The transformation of the intricate 3D model prototype into a tangible ceramic piece presented a challenge. Unlike traditional ceramic pieces that often feature more symmetrical outlines, the front and back of this particular vase differed significantly. Additionally, the contrasting mat glaze on the exterior versus the shiny blue glaze on the interior proved to be a complex feat to achieve during the crafting process.
