DESIGN NAME: Line 3
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Floor lamp
INSPIRATION: The basic idea of the design came about after seeing a stone on which a metal rod rests. The composition of both objects was very powerful and simple.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A solid base of terrazzo with slots in which a sleek lighting profile can be set up in different positions, depending on the use or the arrangement.
Due to the interaction of the monumental base and the interplay of lines, the object behaves like a light sculpture that enters into a dialogue with its environment and user.
With its minimalist design and simple functionality, a durable and high-quality design made of circular materials the lighting object has a timeless design.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design consists of a solid base of terazzo with slots in which a simple, sleek lighting profile can be set up in different positions, depending on the use or the arrangement.
The lighting profile can be easily placed in different positions.
There is a continuous round hole in the side of the foot into which a broom handle can be inserted for easy transport of the foot.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The solid base is made of ''terrazzo', and is a recycling technique that has been used for centuries, especially in Italy.
The granite is made from residual waste that is released during the extraction, felling or demolition of marble, natural stone, glass… circular materials.
These granulate are mixed with cement, clay, sand, quartz and other binding agents, and dyes, poured into a mould and then polished.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design arose spontaneously as a variant of an earlier design that also used a solid block with a recess in the middle where a lighting profile was placed. As a variant, slots have been made in the block at the front to allow different positions of the lighting profile. It was a natural evolution of different possibilities to create a lighting profile.
CHALLENGE: In terms of design, finding the right proportions of the design was a challenge by combining a fine profile with a large solid block. Technically, the search for a compact light source that fits the profile. And the search for a solution so that the profile is not damaged when placed in a different position in the terrazzo foot.
