DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Meet Jeffrey.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Articulating Stop-Motion Puppet Head

INSPIRATION:
Jeffrey's creation was inspired by the work of LAIKA Studios in stop-motion movies such as Coraline and Missing Link, and Mackinnon&Saunders in Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, both revolutionary in their approach to facial animation and winning awards for their work. LAIKA's use of Poly-jet 3D Printing in the replacement method, and Mackinnon&Saunders use of mechanically posed silicone faces. I wanted to use the advantages of both methods and negate things that make them less accessible to other filmmakers.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Jeffrey is a pre-assembled one-file 3D Print, requiring only support cleaning, no assembly required. Complex mechanically posed facial features, independently and in combination, resulting in a wide range of expressions. Variable part density (rigid+flexible), and colour. Fine incremental turn-key positioning for smooth stop-motion animation. Complex mechanisms are completely digital from design to manufacture.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Can something as complex as a mechanically posed Stop-Motion animation puppet head, with variable colour, and part density (flexible face) be 3D printed in a single file without any form of assembly? … Can a single 3D print be brought to life?

CHALLENGE:
One of the harder challenges was finding the right supported tolerance separating moving parts, not too small that the parts would fuse, and not too large that the function of the worm and spur gears and other mechanisms would be negatively impacted. Also, finding inventive ways to decrease the amount of surface area and therefore force required to free moving parts, avoiding breakages.
