DESIGN NAME: OwO Sight
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rehabilitation VR Glasses
INSPIRATION: Our team members' childhood experiences with amblyopia highlighted its prevalence among children. The treatment's challenges, such as complexity, poor compliance, and peer discrimination, risk children missing the crucial treatment window, potentially causing lifelong issues and impacting mental health. We aim to simplify treatment and enhance children's amblyopia rehabilitation through digital and game-based medical design, offering a more engaging and effective approach.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "OwO Sight" is a digital rehabilitation product that combines hardware and software for amblyopic children aged 3-6, integrating VR glasses with eye tracking and a customized rehabilitation game. The device uses eye movement sensors and trackers to capture children's eye movements, allowing them to perform various amblyopia rehabilitation exercises solely through eye rotation. The approach ensures engaging and effective treatment, with real-time data accessibility for parents and doctors.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This product uses playful and engaging games to assist in the rehabilitation of amblyopic children by incorporating various therapeutic methods. Children select objects by prolonged gaze at icons, stimulating inhibited photoreceptor cells in the amblyopic eye and enhancing vision. They also control an owl's movement by frequently shifting their gaze, promoting visual development. Tracking moving fireflies within the game improves the visual acuity of amblyopic patients. Continuous training helps enhance eye coordination and visual tracking abilities. Multifrequency, multicolored lights from gems and crystals in the game stimulate the visual nervous system and promote visual development. The game concludes with a red light flashing 70 times per minute, using red filter stimulation therapy to improve vision when the player gazes at the central depression of a tree hole.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2023 in Beijing and was completed in September 2023 in Beijing.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Background of the study: Amblyopia, also known as "lazy eye", is a common problem that affects children's visual development. It usually manifests as weak vision in one eye or strabismus, etc., thus affecting stereoscopic vision and eye coordination. Early intervention is crucial for treating amblyopia; however, traditional vision correction methods may not be sufficiently appealing to children, which may lead to ineffective treatment.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate a rehabilitation therapy product for amblyopic children that uses a gamified and fun approach to aid treatment. The product combines a variety of therapeutic modalities to help children improve their vision problems through interaction during play.
Research tools include:
Virtual Reality Glasses: Used to create a virtual environment for therapeutic gaming and to track the user's eye movements.
Game software: includes a variety of visual stimuli and therapeutic tasks that are presented to the participant through virtual reality glasses.
Eye tracking technology: Used to capture the user's eye movements in order to adjust the gaming tasks in real time.
PARTICIPANTS: The participants in this study were amblyopic children, representing a wide range of ages and degrees of amblyopia to ensure that the results of the study were broadly applicable. They used virtual reality glasses and therapeutic games for the duration of the study to assess the potential of this gamified rehabilitation therapy product for visual rehabilitation in amblyopic children.
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a gamified rehabilitation therapy product may be a fun and effective approach to help rehabilitate amblyopic children. This innovative approach can engage children's interests and facilitate their treatment progress, and is expected to be one of the ways to improve amblyopia treatment.
CHALLENGE: The eye research direction for amblyopic children is a difficult direction for research in the medical field, with a special target group, difficult research, less relevant data publicly available, and difficult for cross-design between the design field and the medical field. On the technical side, the accuracy of the eye-tracking device and eye-tracking technology has an important impact on the outcome of our treatment.
