DESIGN NAME: Fading Elegance
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fashion Collection
INSPIRATION: The inspiration stems from my late grandfather, who suffered from Alzheimer's. His diary transitioned from simple words to mere numbers, and then to chaotic lines, until nothing remained. This sparked my contemplation of life and death. Facing fading life evokes sadness, yet I sought to embellish this process. I've presented elements symbolizing death and illness with vibrant colors and playful designs to create a novel and commemorative world of fading life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Aspiring to commemorate my late grandfather with Alzheimer’s, I explored various fashion techniques to combine an honest yet hopeful world of my own: knitting hospital bouquet imagery onto coat lapels; crafting ties from hand-knitted socks, and applying traditional Chinese fabric prints onto modern mesh materials. For silhouettes, I became inspired by draping and combining deconstructed t shirts with innovative cuts to create new. My favorite piece of my collection is the faded hospital gown, where I translated my grandfather‘s faded diary into the print used.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a collection suitable for everyday wear. I hope that those who wear it will be drawn to its intriguing designs and experience a sense of joy. Simultaneously, I aim to interpret the fading life with vibrant elements and playful designs, making the topic of life and death less burdensome and offering solace to the living who have lost their loved ones.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2020 and finished in May 2020 in New York, and published by Vogue in May 2020.
Also published by Harper's Bazaar and Dazed in December 2020.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I observed Alzheimer's patients and translated recurring elements from their lives – like mismatched socks, hospital flowers, reading glasses, and disheveled clothing – into fashion design using various materials and techniques. I also watched the film "The Father," which tells the story of an elderly person lost in the illusions of dementia then interpret and visualize my feelings.
CHALLENGE: The design challenge lay in artistically transforming my grandfather's fading diary. I pasted all 355 pages diary onto a white wall, witnessing the gradual fading of text – a process that inspired the integration of diary layout into a gradient-effect print.
On the technical front, the difficulty was combining woven fabric with knitwear. Their distinct properties demanded unique cutting and clean finishes techniques to seamlessly unite them.
