| DESIGN NAME: Travis PRIMARY FUNCTION: Travel Planner INSPIRATION: Large Language Models, or generative AI, is a watershed moment in our industry. These models, such as ChatGPT or Bard, can already suggest basic travel plans based on vague input. What if a generative AI model were trained on extensive travel data and had access to the internet? You'd be able to get a travel itinerary, have the agent search and calculate budget and travel time, and even get them booked — just from talking to a chatbot. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Travis is a generative AI-powered travel planner. Ask Travis however you'd like to Travel, and Travis will generate a full itinerary for you. Review, modify, and manage your itinerary all in one place. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users chat with Travis, a generative AI chatbot. Users can ask Travis to suggest travel destinations from vague, natural language inputs, such as "recommend me some places to travel." Travis then suggests some popular travel destinations, based on the data it's trained on and with access to the web. The user can ask Travis to generate travel itineraries, and the app will show the itineraries in a readable and user-friendly format. The user can save the itineraries or ask Travis to modify the itinerary based on their preferences. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in June 2023 and ended in July 2023. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A native mobile app with a chat interface. The chat agent is a Large Language Model (LLM) that uses generative AI technology. The app parses Travis's responses to relevant formats, such as travel itinerary cards, and display them on the front-end. The back-end server saves the chat history, Travis-generated travel itineraries and the user's preferences. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The designs follow iOS and Android design patterns and interaction methods. TAGS: Ai, mobile, generative AI, travel, chatbot RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Travis is a result of an extensive qualitative interview and synthesis sessions with young travel enthusiasts and secondary research on the perception of generative AI. The design concepts throughly tested with usability test sessions after each iteration. CHALLENGE: Generative AI is a brand-new technology, and people's reactions to the concept of using AI to plan travels vary significantly by individuals. Privacy concerns are most prominent; we address this by storing sensitive information only on local devices and gaining explicit consent on when and how we use the users' data. NAME: Haley Park PROFILE: Haley Park is a software designer and a 3D artist based in Boston, USA. She is currently working as a Product Designer at Square, designing the Square Point of Sale product. She has been working at startups as a designer in South Korea, U.S. and Canada for the last seven years. Her background is a mix of software design, graphic design, motion design and front-end development. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Information and Interaction Design from Yonsei University in Seoul, and a Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University. |
