| DESIGN NAME: Imperiale PRIMARY FUNCTION: 3D Chess Board INSPIRATION: The inspiration behind the Imperiale 3D Chess Board was driven by a passion for merging timeless tradition with contemporary design. The motives were to create a chess board that not only exuded elegance but also introduced a new level of engagement and interaction. The inspiration for this project stemmed from the desire to elevate the chess-playing experience through innovative design concepts and sustainable production processes. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Fiastra Imperiale 3D Chess Board boasts a range of unique properties that redefine the chess-playing experience. With its innovative design and meticulous craftsmanship, this board offers a seamless blend of luxury, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. The use of recycled bioplastic and plexiglass underscores our commitment to sustainability. Each chess board is made sustainable in the Netherlands. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Fiastra Imperiale 3D Chess Board operates just like a traditional chess board, allowing players to engage in the timeless game of chess. With its innovative design, the interaction happens seamlessly as players strategically move the 3D chess pieces across the board. The key frames of this interaction lie in the smooth and effortless movement of the pieces, providing a satisfying tactile experience. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: CNC and Additive manufacturing SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 300 mm x 300 mm x 150 mm TAGS: Sustainable design, unique chess board, board game, luxury design, made in the Netherlands, made in EU, functional art, functional design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design research focused on creating the Fiastra Imperiale 3D chess board, aiming to enhance the chess-playing experience through innovative design. The study involved exploratory research, prototyping, and iterative refinement. Data collection included user feedback, expert evaluations, and usability testing. Insights gained emphasized the importance of aesthetics, tactile engagement, and user-centered design. The Fiastra Imperiale board, with its 3D elements and meticulous craftsmanship, elevates gameplay and bridges traditional and modern design. Its impact extends to business, society, and the promotion of creativity, strategic thinking, and social interaction. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design activity was striking the perfect balance between preserving the traditional essence of chess while infusing it with modern design elements. The creative challenge lay in capturing the timeless appeal of the game while pushing the boundaries of innovation. One major obstacle was the historical perspective associated with chess, as it carries a rich heritage that players deeply appreciate.
