DESIGN NAME: Norstra
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Yacht
INSPIRATION: Norstra was designed with the intention of forging a peaceful link between the past and the future. The yacht's distinctive architecture was inspired by the desire to embark on a journey into a potential and larger universe, giving its passengers the impression of a spotless journey. With its distinctive spatial proportions, the fore and aft structures create a single, cohesive body that emphasizes the close connection between the origin and the destination.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Norstra breaks away from the traditional concept of yachts by featuring a symmetrical hull design with a smooth oval exterior. This symmetrical hull shape allows for easy boat manoeuvres, pivoting and tight turns at sea. Additionally, Norstra stands out for its minimalistic design and intimate spaces, making it one of the most exclusive yacht concepts.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Norstra is an illustration of how yacht designs will have evolved over time. Just as this visionary art is riddled with intricacy, she will be fitted with a counter-rotating propulsion system; using this generations’ most advanced technology. Therefore, increasing maneuverability and operating efficiency while cutting fuel consumption.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in November 2022 and ended in April 2023 in Cebu, Philippines.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This project will have aluminum construction for both hull and superstructure in order to reduce weight which means increased efficiency and lower exhaust emissions. With regards to propulsion, the final configuration has two counter-rotating diesel-electric azipods, fixed at fore and aft.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: LOA: 74.91 meters / LWL: 61.92 meters / Breadth: 11.80 meters / Draught: 1.77 meters / Propulsion: Diesel-Electric Azipod / Range: 5000nm at 14 knots / Max Speed: 18+kts / Guest Capacity: 12 / Crew Capacity: 19

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Technology advances in material and methods are making the construction of yachts a bit easier – but never afar from complexity. These advances have helped pave the way to design a yacht that is less constrained by conventional shapes and forms. In this project, it was crucial for the exterior itself to exhibit what an “ultra-modern yacht” should look like. Hence, a series of sketches were conceived before developing an organic design that would make us feel prehistoric. In an effort to reflect on a time when technology makes the delivery of bolder ideas more feasible, this concept upends traditional boat design and lifts a significant step forward. It also celebrates a fresh perspective on the future of yachting.
CHALLENGE: The design of yachts has advanced overtime and will continue to do so in order to match the rapidly evolving technology as a solution for optimum cruising. With that, our changing lifestyles would have also influenced the way we view architecture through the years. Thus, it had been quite a challenge to reimagine and develop an exterior design that would be as alluring in the future as it is today.
