DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Stealth

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Shovel

INSPIRATION:
Addressing inconsistencies in batching in the construction industry was the inspiration for the design. When batching quantities of materials such as mixing cement the Stealth Shovel can significantly aid in the process of attaining consistent mixes and consistent results on the work site.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The stealth shovel is an example of simple refinements to an age old product greatly enhancing its usability. The stealth shovel has an added top blade which works with the bottom blade to control the quantity and weight of content you lift when shovelling or moving materials around. This means you have the ability to shovel consistent amounts with each shovel load. The ability to control weight also controls the amount of force we place on our back when lifting loads.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The stealth shovel has an added top blade which works with the bottom blade to control the quantity and weight of content you lift when shovelling or moving materials around. This means you have the ability to shovel consistent amounts with each shovel load. The control of weight carried means light and easy usability for everybody including the elderly and young, aiding manoeuvring of materials such as mulches, soils, stone and composts. The ability to control weight also controls the amount of force we place on our back when lifting loads and therefore reduces ergonomic risk factors.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The Stealth Shovel was developed in Melbourne Australia with direct interaction and feedback with workers in the construction industry.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The shovel has been prototyped in both steel and 3d printed in plastic to date for testing purposes. As a shovel for the construction industry the realised shovel would be manufactured in steel. Alternatively the same shovel manufactured in a durable plastic with a larger head could be used for other purposes such as domestic use or the food industry.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The size of the shovels head was designed to hold 10 kg and tested by weighing bucket load of sand on a scale with a very consistent outcome. Part of the testing was to ensure the sand could be easily shifted from the shovel head to the bucket with a simple turn of the handle. I was as imperative that the angles of the top blade did not restrict the sand from being released.
